Installing the May security update from Windows Update. It didn't install going to Retry three times before indicating it would install with the next update. Just wondering if there are issues with its installation. The preview update did install.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

To better understand the problem, please clarify the following:

Are you getting an error code? If yes, which one?

If you don't get an error code, see the update history.

    • Press "Windows + I" and select "Windows Update > Update history".

If you prefer, share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also. What is the version and "OS Build" of your Windows 11?

    • Press "Windows + R", type winver, and click OK.

If you prefer, share a screenshot.

Be sure to censor your email address if it appears. The Microsoft Q&A is public.

    Looking forward to your reply.

The context does not mention KB5089549 specifically, but it does describe common causes and fixes for recurring Windows Update installation failures on Windows 10/11.

Based on that information, the behavior (multiple failed attempts, then deferring to a later update) is consistent with temporary servicing or metadata issues rather than a permanent problem with the update itself. Recommended actions are:

    1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > View history and check whether the Windows Update Troubleshooter has already run and whether it reports:

“Automatically targets the device for an In-Place Upgrade due to recurring installation issues.”

      • If available in your build, run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update.
    2. Let the automatic Windows Update troubleshooter handle servicing corruption
      • On Windows 10/11 version 19H1 and above, if the device repeatedly fails monthly security updates because of file/metadata corruption, an automatic troubleshooter may run.
      • This troubleshooter sets the registry keys AllowInPlaceUpgrade and UpgradeEligible so the device can receive a custom in-place upgrade that repairs corruption while keeping the current Windows version but moving it to the latest security level.
      • After it runs, continue checking for updates until the security update or a feature/update-assistant–driven upgrade completes.
    3. If the same security update keeps failing and no troubleshooter runs
      • Follow the general guidance in Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors (linked from the Windows Update error articles in the context). This guidance covers additional diagnostics and repair options when updates repeatedly fail.

If the preview update installed successfully and only this monthly security update is failing, it is likely a transient servicing or metadata issue that the automatic troubleshooter or a subsequent in-place upgrade will resolve, rather than a permanent problem with the KB itself.
