I have tried to install Windows 11 but says my computer isn't compatible. I think I need to install a later Intel SST Audio Controller - how can I install when the update isn't coming up automatically? Where is the website to install from? I have looked in Windows Device Manager

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

May I please know the version or edition of the Windows 11 Operating system installed on your device?
Type 'Winver' in the search bar on the taskbar and click enter.

Post a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.

If you’re trying to upgrade your PC to Windows 11, version 24H2 - especially on an 11th Gen Intel processor, you might run into compatibility issues during the upgrade, or the upgrade may be blocked until you install the latest drivers.

    • Open Device Manager and expand the Sound, video, and game controllers section.
    • If you see anything related to Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST), you should update those drivers to the latest version.

Usually, you can go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. You should receive the updated driver automatically. If not, check under Optional updates to see if the Intel Smart Sound Technology driver is available there.

    • If you are still having issues, in Device Manager, right-click the Intel Smart Sound Technology device, select Update driver, then choose Search automatically for drivers and install any available updates.
    • Alternatively, go to the Intel website, download the Intel Driver & Support Assistant, and run it to update all of your Intel drivers.

After updating, try running the Windows 11 upgrade again to see if it completes successfully.

Windows 11, version 24H2 has a known compatibility block for certain Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) Audio Controller drivers. When these affected drivers are present, Windows Update will not offer the upgrade until the driver is updated.

To proceed safely, follow these steps:

    1. Confirm whether the Intel SST driver is blocking the upgrade
      1. Open Device Manager.
      2. Expand System devices.
      3. Look for Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) Audio Controller.
      4. Open its PropertiesDriver tab and check the Driver Version.
      5. If the file IntcAudioBus.sys is version 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152, the device is affected and Windows 11 24H2 will be blocked.
    2. Update Intel SST drivers via Windows Update (preferred)
      1. Open SettingsWindows Update.
      2. Select Check for updates.
      3. Install any offered driver updates, especially for audio or system devices.
The issue is resolved by updating the Intel SST Audio Controller drivers to:
      • 10.30.00.5714 or later, or
      • 10.29.00.5714 or later.
Later versions might show only the last part of the version number, and for this issue, 10.30.x versions are not considered newer than 10.29.x versions.
    3. If no suitable driver appears in Windows Update
      • If, after updating and waiting up to 48 hours, the Windows 11 24H2 update is still not offered, it is possible that compatible drivers for the specific hardware configuration are not available via Windows Update.
      • In that case, contact the PC or motherboard manufacturer (OEM) and obtain the latest Intel SST Audio Controller driver package from their support site. Install it, then check Windows Update again and wait up to 48 hours for the block to clear.
    4. Do not force the upgrade with tools
      • For devices with the affected Intel SST driver versions, do not manually update to Windows 11 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or media creation tool until the driver has been updated, because this can lead to blue screen errors.

Once the Intel SST driver is updated to a compatible version and there are no other safeguards, Windows 11 24H2 should be offered automatically via Windows Update within about 48 hours. If the PC still reports that it is not compatible, run the PC Health Check app to confirm whether there are additional hardware requirements that are not met.
