My suggestion is to search the Internet, or ask artificial intelligence, for a video editing app without any online component. Then you can read reviews and make a choice. Best of luck.

    Hello Mark Postell,

Just one quick note, Clipchamp actually does its editing and exporting locally on your machine, and your media only gets uploaded if you turn on the Content Backup feature, so technically it can run without anything leaving your device. That said, if you'd rather use something that isn't tied to a Microsoft account at all - there are some solid free editors that install natively on Windows and don't touch the cloud.

    • DaVinci Resolve (free) — pro-grade, used on real film/TV work; steepest learning curve but the most powerful of the bunch.
    • Shotcut — free, open-source, lightweight, wide format support; good middle ground.
    • Kdenlive — free, open-source, multi-track timeline, mature and stable.
    • OpenShot — free, open-source, the most beginner-friendly; simple drag-and-drop for cuts, trims, and titles.
    • VSDC Free Video Editor — Windows-only, non-linear, leans more advanced.

All of these install like a normal desktop app, don't require sign-in, and keep your project files on your own drive.

Clipchamp already supports local, non-cloud processing for editing and exporting.

    Key points from Clipchamp behavior:

    1. Editing and exporting are done locally
      • Clipchamp “works without uploading media files to the cloud for editing and exporting.”
      • All previews while editing and the export process run on the local computer, not on an online server.
    2. Keep source files locally and avoid backup features
      • By default, media files (video, images, audio) are used from the local device or local/organization storage.
      • To avoid cloud storage in the personal version, do not enable the content backup feature. Content backup is what stores media files online.
      • In the work version, media and project information are automatically backed up to OneDrive/SharePoint; to avoid that, use a personal account without content backup enabled and keep files on the local device.
    3. Offline behavior
      • Clipchamp processes media locally and stores working copies in the browser cache and temp folders.
      • As long as the source files remain available on the device and content backup is not used, projects can be edited and exported without relying on cloud upload for processing.

If Clipchamp is used with a personal account and the content backup feature is left disabled, it functions as a non-invasive, locally processing video editor while keeping media on the device.
