I am trying to move a new phone and when making a backup of the authenticator app I keep getting the 'Something went wrong error'
I have tried multiple times to complete the back up and I am signed in to an appropriate Microsoft account.

I have the same problem as of today. I keep getting the same error. I even set up a new microsoft account to see if its maybe account or strorage related.

I am having the exact same issue as well. Noticed a rogue login, denied it, then went into my authenticator, it said backup stopped as of the 10th. Tried to re-enable it and have the exact same issues.

I am having the same issue on the latest Pixel Phone running Android this was working fine and I had a backup from March, however when I tried to turn it off and on again I get this error now. Have you sent a report to MS by doing below?

I am also facing the same issue. I reinstalled the app and attempted account recovery, but I keep receiving the error message: “Something went wrong.”
Microsoft Team, please resolve this issue as soon as possible. I have more than 40 applications and websites with two-factor authentication enabled through this app.

I need to migrate from my old Pixel 6a to the new phone. So in preparation I wanted to make sure that the cloud backup was working and up-to-date. I was shocked to see that the last backup was more than 2 years old (yes, 2024!) even though I had added a ton of new accounts meanwhile. Since there's no "backup now" button I switched off cloud backup in order to switch it on again. But back luck - doesn't work, got the same error message like you all and the old backup got deleted automatically. Now I'm stuck.
Microsoft, we need a solution!

Of course I was stupid and deleted the backup because I thought turning the feature off and on again would somehow magically work.
I assume I'll just have to create a new backup when the service is back?

Sent the logs but stressed over losing 50+ authentications if something happens to my phone. The entire reason I went with MS was the backup.

They really need a way out of the black hole. The fact that you can't get access to the TOTP tokens makes this something of a disaster. There are plenty of other ways of more transparently accessing the code i.e. bitwarden but they've made it extremely difficult to switch... and now they apparently haven't been keeping their own backup service working.

You're not alone. Several users have been reporting that they are unable to sign in MS authentificator and are unable to do cloud backups. This started about 5-6 days ago.
Microsoft's lazy handling of this major problem is really disappointing and frustrating. My trust in their authentification app is shattered right now.
Microsoft, if you read this, do something! Adress the problem and solve it!

I have the same problem. I haven't made a backup for a year. I disabled and re-enabled it to do one, but now I keep getting an error and it won't let me. I need help; I'm afraid of losing all my credentials, which are too many.

They might have fixed it, I just tried to turning cloud back up on again and it just let me. It asked if I wanted to replace my old backup that I thought I had already deleted when I was trying to turn it off and back on again.
I saw the above comment about it working, mine also completed a backup

Hi all. I was able to backup this morning. So something got fixed.
I was able to turn backup back on. After turning backup back on, it displayed my Microsoft account where the backup is stored. 😅 Looks to have been fixed server side.

Do not follow the chatbot's suggestion. Right now it will delete your backup and when you try to turn it back on again on your old device that was working, it'll fail in just the same way. So now it's even more broken. <slow clap>
I assume if I delete my backup I'll just be able to recreate it once the service is working again? I was being dumb and thought turning it off and on again was of course gonna work.
I assume that you will be able to recreate the backup once their server is back running. The problem is that it puts you in a precarious position for now, so you better not lose your old phone! I find it quite amusing that the chatbot's suggestion is now deleted, ostensibly as a violation of their own CoC.
Like others, I can confirm that the backup is working now. I wish MS would have made some comment on this given its potential severity.

I can confirm it. Backup works again, and you can restore on a new device if necessary.
I was checking daily and, yes, they fixed it between 24 hours ago and now!
