Edge Favorites lists icons sometimes missing after update to Beta 26220.8474

I noticed immediately after the update to 26220.8474 that when running Edge, the icons which should be to the left of my Favorites are frequently missing, replaced with a generic globe icon.

Usually, if you close Edge and open it again, the icons show up properly, but not always. It might take more than one attempt.

No big deal. Although it does make me aware of how helpful those icons are, to quickly find the site you want to go to.

Working properly here, have not seen that concern at all. Have you tried clearing cache, etc.

    Regards,

    Hi Bert,

That sounds more like an Edge issue, not Insiders.

Report the issue using Edge Feedback and use a screenshot.

This behavior is consistent with how Microsoft Edge looks up and caches site icons (favicons) and can be exposed more often after an update.

Edge uses a multi-step lookup order for favicons for items such as Favorites:

    1. Exact URL cache
    2. Host-level cache
    3. Favicon service
    4. Default initial or generic icon

If the exact URL cache lookup fails or the favicon cache is in an inconsistent state after an update, Edge may temporarily fall back to a generic icon (such as a globe) until the correct favicon is recached. This can cause icons to be missing or incorrect until Edge is restarted or the site is revisited, which matches the behavior described.

To mitigate the issue when it occurs:

    1. Revisit the affected favorite’s URL directly in Edge. This refreshes the favicon cache for that specific URL and often restores the correct icon.
    2. If the problem persists across many favorites, clear the favicon cache by clearing cached images and files:
      • Go to edge://settings/privacy.
      • Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
      • Select Cached images and files.
      • Select Clear now.
      • Revisit the favorite sites so Edge can recache their favicons.
    3. For a deeper reset, clear the favicon database manually:
      • Close Edge completely.
      • In File Explorer, go to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default.
      • Delete the Favicons and Favicons-journal files.
      • Restart Edge and open the favorite sites again so their icons are redownloaded.

After clearing, icons may briefly appear as default or generic icons until Edge completes downloading and caching the correct favicons.
