Microsoft have not announced they were changing the Windows EULA to indicate that the Home version of Windows is strictly for personal use, Microsoft have always indicated there was no restrictions on a Windows licence, it is only the Office licences that must use a business edition in a work environment, this forum is just a user to user forum, if you need official confirmation of this, you would need to contact their support directly.
Does Windows 11 Home EULA prohibit commercial use in a small business (as of May 2026)?
Hi Microsoft Team,
I am running a small business in Vietnam with 7 employees. All of our laptops came pre-installed with Windows 11 Home (OEM) from factory. Our tasks are basic: Office apps and emails. We do not use any server, Domain Join, or Azure AD. We use it for simple tasks with almost no professional or highly secure requirements.
Recently, local distributors/salespersons claimed that "Microsoft has updated its policy in May 2026, stating that Windows Home is strictly for personal use, and using it in a business environment is illegal and subject to copyright fines."
However, I have checked the Windows 11 Home EULA (updated recently) and found no clauses prohibiting commercial or business use (unlike Office Home & Student which clearly states "Not for commercial use").
Could you please clarify:
- Does the current Windows 11 Home license allow commercial/business use for a small company?
- Is there any specific regional amendment in Vietnam effective from May 2026 that bans Windows Home in business environments?
Thank you!
