Open Word.

Go to File - Account.

Set the Office Theme drop down to Colorful or some other mode but not Black

Then if the actual document background is black with white text, open a document.

On the top View menu, click the 'Switch Modes' button to toggle that view off.

To change Office 365 (Microsoft 365 apps on Windows) from a black/dark background back to a white/light one, change the Office Theme:

Open any Microsoft 365 app (for example, Word).
Select File > Options.
On the General page, go to Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office.
Set Office Theme to White (or Colorful if preferred).
Select OK.

If Windows is in dark mode and Office is following the system, you can also set Office Theme to Use system setting if you want it to track Windows, or keep it on White to stay light regardless of Windows mode.

Note: The theme you choose applies to all Microsoft 365 desktop apps.
