Cursor all over the place

Since the last update my cursor moves all over the screen. Sometimes it jumps forward, other times it jumps to another paragraph. If I highlight an area to delete it won't delete. I have to set the cursor at the end and backspace one by one to delete things. Suggestions?

    Hi, good day!

    • When was the last time it worked properly?
    • What specific update did you install recently?
    • Have you tried the AI suggested solution?
    • Does the problem happen in BIOS?

Let's try to test whether is a hardware or software issue.

Completely shut down the laptop then turn it back on

Immediately press the BIOS key repeatedly, usually F2, Delete, Esc, or F10

Once inside BIOS/UEFI, please try moving the cursor if the BIOS supports a touchpad or test whether selections act like they are being dragged/highlighted automatically.

I look forward to receiving your update and I'm willing to collaborate with you till we resolve the issue. Do keep me informed by clicking "Add comment" below instead of Yes or No button.

The described behavior matches known cursor and text-navigation issues seen after specific Windows or application updates. These are typically resolved by installing the latest Windows and app updates that contain fixes.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Update Windows
Install the latest cumulative update for Windows 10/11, which includes fixes for cursor and text-area issues.
      • Open SettingsUpdate & SecurityWindows Update.
      • Select Check for updates and install all available updates.
      • Restart the PC when prompted.
    2. Update Office apps (if the issue occurs in Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
If the cursor jumps or selection fails inside Office apps:
      • Open any Office app (for example, Word or Excel).
      • Go to FileAccountUpdate OptionsUpdate Now.
      • Let updates install and then restart the app.
    3. If the issue is in Excel specifically (cursor flickering or jumping in cells)
There is a known issue after the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update that was fixed by later Windows and Office updates. Ensuring both Windows and Office are fully updated (steps 1 and 2) is the supported resolution.
    4. If the issue is in Edge text areas (cursor moving incorrectly with arrow keys)
On older Windows 10 version 1511 builds, cursor movement in Edge text areas could be incorrect. The documented fix is to update Windows to at least:
      • Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607), or
      • Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703). Newer versions of Windows already include this fix, so step 1 covers this.

After applying updates, test cursor movement and text selection again in the affected apps. If the problem persists, note which specific app(s) and scenarios are affected (for example, only in Excel cells, only in browser text boxes, or everywhere in Windows) and provide that detail when seeking further support.
