Is Windows 11 File Explorer constantly crashing?

Hi all,

I've had a windows 11 laptop for maybe 6 months now, and I've noticed a repeating issue that I can't find a source to, even though I have a fix. When I leave my laptop running, say overnight, I'll come back and find that my entire desktop is missing, or that the taskbar specifically is missing. I don't know what exactly causes it, but the most consistent fix I've found is going into my task manager and restarting File Explorer. Without fail, everything pops back in every time. Is this actually the result of File Explorer, or could it be a more vague problem like a program stalling that requires file explorer?

This issue also happens while I'm gaming, but in the inverse. Sometimes, I'll open a game and the taskbar will still be on top of the screen even when I use hotkeys like Alt+Enter to ensure the game is running in fullscreen. predictably, the fix is to go into task manager and restart file explorer, which instantly fixes the problem again. It's more frustrating than it is an actual issue, but I've never had this issue on windows 10.

Is there a way to fix this, or have y'all ever had it happen?

Thank you for the information. It is really broad to pinpoint where exactly the fault is coming from especially it is random. There are common causes that we can start to lookout for and possibly identify what is really happening.

  1. Explorer crash due to background processes
    • Some ASUS utilities (Armoury Crate, MyASUS, etc.) and GPU-related overlays (NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Discord overlay, etc.) can cause Explorer instability when resuming from idle or when launching games.
  2. Memory
    • You only have 8GB RAM with a modern i7 + 4070. Overnight with browsers, game launchers, and background services, memory could get tight.
  3. Windows 11 bugs
    • There are known issues with Explorer and taskbar disappearing after sleep, Fast Startup, or when the system is left idle for long periods.

Do these steps first the we can monitor.

  1. Disable Fast Startup (Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Turn off Fast Startup) — this resolves taskbar/Explorer disappearing for some people after overnight uptime.
  2. Event Viewer check: Press Win + R → type eventvwr.msc → under Windows Logs > Application, look for errors around the time your taskbar/desktop disappears. If you see explorer.exe or ShellExperienceHost.exe errors, it confirms the culprit.
  3. Remove ASUS software Armoury Crate and MyASUS have been tied to Explorer crashes. If you don’t need them, try disabling them at startup.
  4. Consider to upgrade your ram to 16gb.
  5. System File Check - Open CMD and enter these commands one-by-one:

sfc /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I am writing to express my deep frustration regarding the repeated and systematic crashes of Windows Explorer, which make the system practically unusable.

This is not an isolated incident: the problem recurs frequently, interrupting my work and causing considerable loss of time. I would expect a core component of the operating system to be stable and reliable. It is not.

I am an ordinary Windows 11 user, not an IT professional. I cannot — and should not have to — resort to advanced technical solutions just to keep the file manager of my everyday work system running properly. The workarounds Microsoft typically suggests require expertise that a regular user does not have, and should not need to have.

Every crash costs me time: lost time, interrupted work, accumulated frustration. No one gives that time back to me. I ask that this issue be addressed with the seriousness it deserves, with real solutions accessible to all users — not just tech-savvy ones.

Disabling Fast Startup seems to have fixed the problem, as it hasn't happened since. Thanks!

Ogni crash mi costa tempo: tempo perso, lavoro interrotto, stress accumulato. Questo tempo non me lo restituisce nessuno. Chiedo che il problema venga affrontato con la serietà che merita, con soluzioni reali e accessibili a tutti gli utenti, non solo agli esperti.

    Hi!

Can I get a bit more information on what device are you using, is it a desktop or a laptop? If it's a pre built desktop can you include the system specification like CPU, RAM, GPU etc. If it's a laptop the make and model would be fine.

Within the past 6months are there any instances that it worked fine without any error when you use it? or the issue just happening if you leave it for a few hours or overnight.
