Use Windows 11’s sound and privacy settings to re‑enable audio access and change any “Don’t allow” setting back to “Allow.”
- Check that speakers/mic aren’t disabled
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select your speakers, then select Device properties.
- Make sure the Disable check box is cleared for the output device.
- Under Input, select your microphone, choose Device properties, and again ensure Disable is cleared.
- Set the correct default audio device
- In Settings > System > Sound, under Output, select the device you want to use. Selecting it sets it as the default.
- If an external monitor without speakers is selected, switch to your actual speakers or headphones.
- Fix microphone privacy “Don’t allow” settings
- Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security.
- Under App permissions, select Microphone.
- Turn Microphone access On.
- Turn Let apps access your microphone On.
- If the issue is with a specific app, scroll down under Let apps access your microphone and turn that app’s toggle On (from “Don’t allow” to Allow).
- If using Microsoft 365 or Teams in a browser
If “Don’t allow” appears in the browser bar for microphone:
- Select the lock or microphone icon in the browser address bar.
- Change Microphone permission from Block/Don’t allow to Allow or Always allow for the site hosting Microsoft 365 or Teams.
- Refresh the page and test audio again.
If the audio device still shows as not allowed or muted after these steps, run the Windows audio troubleshooter from Settings > System > Sound and follow its recommendations.
