My computer will not download the following:

2026-05 Security Update (KB5089549) (26200.8457) and

2026-05 .NET Framework Security Update (KB5087051)

and gives the same download error code for both - 0x800706f4. I cannot find what this means.

    Hi,

The first step would be to try resetting Windows updates using an automatic script.

Reset Windows updates in Windows 10/11

    http://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2015/12/windows-update-complete-reset-in.html

Download the file > Right-click it and run as administrator. Reboot and check for updates again.

Error 0x800706f4 is a generic failure during the update process. For home Windows 11 devices, use the standard Windows Update troubleshooting flow and then reattempt the two May 2026 security updates.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
      1. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security.
      2. Select Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
      3. Under Get up and running, select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
      4. Apply any fixes it suggests and restart the PC.
    2. Reset Windows Update components
      1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
      2. In Services, locate Windows Update, right‑click it, and select Stop.
      3. In File Explorer, go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
      4. Delete all files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution (do not delete the folder itself).
      5. Go back to Services, right‑click Windows Update, and select Start.
      6. Restart the PC.
    3. Check disk space Ensure there is sufficient free space for updates (at least 20 GB for a 64‑bit OS). Free space if needed, then retry Windows Update.
    4. Verify network and TLS settings (if downloads still fail)
      1. Make sure ports 80 and 443 are open on any firewall or security software and that no VPN/security appliance is blocking Windows Update endpoints.
      2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
              reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Server"

        Confirm:
              Enabled REG_DWORD 0x1
              DisabledByDefault REG_DWORD 0x0

If Enabled is not 0x1, adjust it accordingly and restart.
    5. Manually install the prerequisite/servicing stack update if applicable If the failure is due to a missing servicing stack or prerequisite update, install the latest cumulative update for Windows 11 from the Windows 11 update history page, then retry installing KB5089549 and KB5087051 via Windows Update.
    6. If the issue persists After these steps, if 0x800706f4 still occurs, collect the CBS.log from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS and contact Microsoft Support, attaching the log so support can identify the exact cause.
