One of our managers wants to know how best to track training completion of his team. Do you have an LMS that tracks training progress? Can we put this training in our LMS to track completion? This is the training https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/certifications/modern-desktop/?practice-assessment-type=certification

    Hello Justine Bennett,

Greetings! Thanks for raising this question in the Q&A forum.

That's a great question! Microsoft Learn does not have a traditional standalone LMS (Learning Management System), but there are some really good built-in options that allow managers to track their team's training progress including the Modern Desktop certification training you referenced. The reason tracking isn't automatic out of the box is that Microsoft Learn is a self-paced public platform, so organizational tracking requires a small setup on your end.

Here are your best options, step by step:

Option 1: Use Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting (Easiest Option)

This is the most straightforward way for a manager to track team progress on Microsoft Learn content.

    1. Go to learn.microsoft.com and sign in with your organization's Microsoft account.
    2. Set up Organizational Reporting by following the setup guide at learn.microsoft.com/training/support/integrations — it uses Azure Data Share to deliver daily progress and completion data.
    3. The data can be stored in a SQL database and then visualized using Power BI or Excel, giving you an LMS-style dashboard showing who has completed what.
    4. Share this report with your manager so they can track each team member's progress on the Modern Desktop certification path.

Option 2: Use Viva Learning in Microsoft Teams (Best for Teams Users)

If your organization uses Microsoft Teams, this is the most seamless experience.

    1. Open Microsoft Teams and go to the Viva Learning app (available under Apps).
    2. The entire Microsoft Learn catalog, including the Modern Desktop certification training, is available here by default.
    3. Managers can assign the training directly to team members from within Viva Learning.
    4. Team members' progress shows under "My Learning → In Progress" and "My Learning → Completed."
    5. For broader organizational reporting, combine Viva Learning with the Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting service mentioned above.

Option 3: Integrate into Your Existing LMS

If your organization already has its own LMS (like Cornerstone, SAP SuccessFactors, or a custom one), you can bring Microsoft Learn content into it.

    1. Use the Microsoft Learn Catalog API to pull in certification training content, including the Modern Desktop certification page, directly into your LMS.
    2. For tracking completions, connect your LMS to the Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting service, which provides daily completion data.
    3. Note that there is no real-time API for completion tracking data is refreshed once per day.

    Quick Tip for the Manager

Make sure all team members sign in to Microsoft Learn with their organizational Microsoft account (not a personal account). This is essential for their progress to be captured in organizational reports.

For tracking team completion of Microsoft Learn and certification-related training, there are three main options in the provided context.

    1. Use Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting (reporting only)
      • Organizational Reporting provides user progress and completion data for Microsoft Learn training and certification content.
      • Setup is a one-time configuration using Azure Data Share to receive a daily refresh of progress/completion data into the organization’s environment.
      • Data can be stored in a SQL database and reported on with tools such as Excel, Power BI, or direct SQL queries.
      • The simplest option described is to store the data in SQL and use the standard Power BI report template, which is pre-modeled and gives LMS-style reporting without additional configuration.
    2. Integrate Microsoft Learn with an existing LMS (catalog + reporting)
      • The Learn Catalog API can be used to ingest Microsoft Learn training and certification catalog items (such as the Modern Desktop certification-related content) into the organization’s own LMS or internal site.
      • For completion tracking, the recommended approach is still to use the Organizational Reporting service and then ingest that completion data into the LMS or reporting system, so the LMS can show which users have attempted/completed the Learn content.
      • There are no real-time reporting APIs; completion data is provided once per day via Organizational Reporting.
    3. Use Viva Learning as the learning hub
      • Viva Learning in Microsoft Teams surfaces Microsoft Learn content (by default, the entire Microsoft Learn catalog) along with other providers.
      • Users access Learn training content through Viva Learning, and the organization uses Microsoft Learn Organizational Reporting to get broad completion reporting on that content.
      • Viva Learning itself tracks in-progress and completed assignments for users with Viva Learning premium, and shows them under My learning → In progress and My learning → Completed. Some content sources report progress automatically; others require users to manually mark completion.

    Summary for the manager’s scenario:

    • There is not a separate, standalone LMS product solely for Microsoft Learn, but:
      • Organizational Reporting + Power BI/SQL can function as a lightweight LMS-style reporting solution for Microsoft Learn and certification training.
      • Existing LMS systems can ingest the Learn catalog and then use Organizational Reporting data to track completions.
      • Viva Learning provides an integrated experience in Teams, with assignment/progress views plus organizational reporting via Microsoft Learn.

The specific certification training referenced can be:

    • Promoted and linked from an internal site or LMS using the Learn Catalog API.
    • Tracked for user progress and completion using the Organizational Reporting service, optionally surfaced through Power BI, an LMS, or Viva Learning.
