I bought an Xbox 360 from eBay and I can't create an Xbox Live account on it. Is it still possible to make one?

Xbox Live still works on Xbox 360 in 2025, but creating a new account directly on the console often fails because modern Microsoft accounts use two-step verification, which the Xbox 360 does not fully support.

One way to fix this is to create your account online and then use an app password when signing in on the console. Here are the steps:

Go to account.microsoft.comon a PC or mobile device and create a Microsoft account.
After setting up your account, go to account.live.com/proofs/AppPasswordand generate an app password. This is a special password for older devices like the Xbox 360.
On your Xbox 360, connect to the internet and go to Settings > System > Add New Profile > Join Xbox Live. Enter your Microsoft account email and the app password you created.

If you still see errors, try clearing the system cache (Settings > System > Storage > press Y on the hard drive > Clear System Cache) and make sure your console has the latest update.

If the console is banned, you can check at enforcement.xbox.com.

Please note that the Xbox 360 Marketplace closed in July 2024, so you cannot buy new content. Multiplayer will only work if the game’s servers are still supported by the publisher.

Hi im having a similar problem, I have a profile on my old xbox 360 that i want to have linked to my xbox live account, I created the account purely to connect to this profile, but when i try to join xbox live with that profile i get this message "this Microsoft account is associated with a different xbox live profile. Try a different account." Yet my live account has never been used on a xbox console before? Can you please help as I would like to be able to use my old profile on other devices

Another thing: you said to go to system settings and click add new profile, can't I just download a profile? Because when I try it gives me an error code

Hello Tuwiligas,

“Download Profile” only works if your Microsoft account already has an Xbox Live gamertag. If you created a new Microsoft account specifically to link your offline Xbox 360 profile, the console cannot merge an offline profile with an account that already has (or later gets) a gamertag.

If your account already has a gamertag: Use Download Profile on the Xbox 360 and sign in with your email + an App Password (older device sign‑in).

Create App Password: go to account.microsoft.com > Security > Advanced security options > App passwords.

If your account does not have a gamertag yet and you want to bring your offline profile online: use a brand‑new Microsoft account (no prior Xbox Live association) when you choose Join Xbox Live on the 360.

Unfortunately, the app password generated by Microsoft can sometimes exceed the Xbox 360's 16-character input limit. You could try regenerating the app password multiple times until you get a shorter one, but there's no guarantee. This is a limitation between the password generator and the older console hardware.
