Office 2021 for Mac activation — purchased license not recognized

I purchased Office 2021 for Mac directly from Microsoft. My Microsoft order history still shows the purchase, and I downloaded and reinstalled Office from that order. However, Word 16.114.1 on macOS Tahoe 26.6.2 says my Office 2021 license is not supported, and when I sign out and then sign back in my Microsoft account says no license found.

I have already reinstalled Word from Microsoft and restarted my Mac. I need a support agent to investigate my existing purchase and restore activation of my perpetual Office 2021 license. I do not want to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription to replace a license I already paid for.

Office for Mac Reduced Functionality - Reports involving Version 16.114.1

    Update 2026-10-28 11:00 UTC

Have a report that 16.114.3 (26102720) released October 27, 2026 fixes the issue.

Tracking multiple reports from Oct 22, 2026 involving Office for Mac entering a reduced-functionality/read-only state or failing to recognize a valid Office license. e.g.

You may have this problem if your Mac is running macOS 12 Monterey or later and your Office version is 16.114.1 (26102031) or later.

How to see what versions you have:

    • macOS: Apple menu → About This Mac
    • Office: Word → About Word (or Excel → About Microsoft Excel)

How to submit a Problem Report for this issue:

Submitting a Problem Report sends information directly to Microsoft and is generally a more effective way to help Microsoft assess the scope of this issue, than adding comments, answers, or questions in this forum.

From an Office App do Help → Feedback → Report a Problem

    Include in the Report your:

    • macOS version
    • Office version
    • Office edition (Home & Student 2021, Home & Business 2021, etc.)

Copilot suggests this for a concise description to use in your Report (feel free to improvise).

Office for Mac perpetual license no longer recognized after update to the reported version 16.114.1. Office enters a read-only/reduced-functionality state. Unable to create, edit, or save documents. Office displays activation prompts and/or reports that the Office License is not supported.

Confirmed Workaround - Rollback to an earlier Office build and disable automatic updates.

I am also tracking a Reddit post on what appears to be a similar problem:

    [External Non-Microsoft Site] https://www.reddit.com/r/Office365/comments/1xd3acb/fix_mac_office_update_falsely_demanding_microsoft/

Reddit is a third-party site, not affiliated with Microsoft. I can't verify the accuracy of the information posted there or endorse the proposed workaround. The root cause described there has not been verified by Microsoft.

Thanks to Reddit user TortelliniTort who first reported the problem and a potential workaround.

I have asked a question to a contact at Microsoft trying to figure out if this is a glitch or an intentional change. I will post back with any information I receive.

Update: Microsoft has fixed the Office 2021 activation issue – confirmed!

Good news! Microsoft replied to the feedback report I submitted on October 25, confirming that the issue had been fixed.

Their response, received on October 28, was:

“We have fixed the issue and please update to newest version 16.114.1027.3, thanks.”

I have now updated to the latest version, and the problem is completely resolved. Word, Excel and PowerPoint all work as expected with my existing Office Home & Business 2021 license.

Before Microsoft's fix became available, I successfully restored my Office applications by rolling back to version 16.114 (26101123). This was quick and straightforward, and the existing license was recognised automatically without signing in again.

The rollback was a useful temporary workaround, but it is no longer necessary now that the fix is available.

My recommendation to anyone still experiencing this issue: update Office to the latest version through Microsoft AutoUpdate. There is no need to buy Office 2024 or a Microsoft 365 subscription to resolve this particular activation problem.

Thanks to everyone who contributed information and helped investigate this!
