For a home Windows PC migration, these are the supported options in the provided guidance:
- Use Windows Backup and Restore The PC-to-PC transfer feature is no longer available. The current recommendation is to use Windows Backup and Restore instead.
- If the PC-to-PC transfer option is still present during setup
This transfer experience works during setup of the new PC and requires:
- Both PCs on the same Wi-Fi or LAN network
- Both PCs plugged into power
- The old PC updated with the latest cumulative updates for Windows 10 or Windows 11
- The new PC running Windows 11, version 2024 or later
- Sign-in with a Microsoft account on the new PC
- The Microsoft account must not already have an existing backup
- What transfers
- Files such as documents, photos, videos, and other files across folders or drives
- Settings and preferences such as wallpaper, themes, and personalization settings
- What does not transfer
- Installed applications
- Saved passwords and sign-in credentials
- OneDrive files
- System and OS files such as Program Files, Program Data, and Temp
- Data on BitLocker-encrypted drives unless those drives are decrypted first
- If using the setup transfer flow
- On the old PC, open Windows Backup and select Transfer information to a new PC
- On the new PC during setup, choose the option to transfer from another PC
- Enter the old PC name on the new PC
- Enter the one-time code shown on the new PC into the old PC
- After pairing, choose what files and folders to transfer
- Select Start transfer on the new PC
- If the transfer option is missing on the old PC
- Go to Settings > Windows Update
- Select Check for updates
- Install all updates
- Restart the PC
- Search again for Windows Backup
- Storage note If the new PC has less storage than the old PC, some files or folders must be deselected before starting the transfer.
