Hi,

We are planning to migrate all of our Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard to Server 2019 Standard. For this, we will have to migrate our Sharepoint 2016 Servers (2 webserver and 2 app servers) to new Windows Server 2019 Standard server machines. We have got the VMware virtualized environment and all these sharepoint servers are in redundant/load balancing mode 2 for webservices and 2 for appservices.

Can any one please guide us through the detailed step by step process to migrate these sharepoint server instances to new Server 2019 with healthier and smooth transition without loosing any data or application.

Also, do we need license key if we upgrade from Sharepoint 2016 to 2019 during this OS migration?

Thanks and Regards
Ali,

I think the best solution would be adding new servers running Windows Server 2019 to the SharePoint farm on a one by one basis and then remove the old ones running Windows Server 2012 R2 after each new server is active in the SharePoint farm.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi @ahmed qureshi ,

You can follow the official Microsoft documentation guides for migrating to SharePoint 2019:

    Upgrade to SharePoint Server 2019
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/upgrade-and-update/upgrade-to-sharepoint-server-2019

For upgrading your Windows Server versions, you can follow the following official documentations:

Install, upgrade, or migrate to Windows Server
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started-19/install-upgrade-migrate-19

Upgrade Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2019
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/upgrade/upgrade-2012r2-to-2019

When upgrading your Windows Servers to a newer version, you will need the product key of the newer Windows Server operating system.

    @ahmed qureshi
    Here’re steps:

1.Create a new SharePoint 2016 farm in the windows server 2019.
2.Backup the old farm in the windows server 2012 R2 Standard.
3.Restore the old farm in the windows server 2019.

    Hi All,

Thanks for your precious response. We have not yet started the migration process. Lets give us some time so we can plan and start the process to verify the steps to see if it helps.

    Thanks

    Hi @Emily Du-MSFT ,

Actually we have 4 sharepoint servers running which includes 1 application, 1 search and 2 web services roles. Also, we have 2 SQL server 2016 nodes running in windows clustering for this SP environment. We also need to migrate these SQl servers to SQl 2019.

Do we need to migrate SQL first before migrating the Sharepoint?

Please help with the following steps which we have planned to migrate the entire environment.

    1. Create new server and install SQl server 2019
    2. Use DMA to migrate the database from older server to new server
    3. Create new servers and install sharepoint 2019 for each and every service running currently
    4. Take the backup of the old server farm
    5. restore the old farm backup to new server 2019

Please guide if we are on right track.

    Thanks
