Hi,

I have only found articles on how to remove the share button for Sharepoint online, not on-premise installations.

Not only remove the share button from pages but also from documents and all list items.

Hi @Daniel,

Thank you for posting in this community.

Unfortunately, we don't have a way to remove this share button. It's designed by SharePoint, and we can't change it.

As the name SharePoint suggests, its main function is to make it easy to share and collaborate on files. The Share button is a one-click button that makes sharing faster and easier. Therefore, the Share button was never designed to be removable.

If you don't want people other than the site's owner to be able to share the site's content, you can click on the gear above >Site permissions >Advanced permissions settings >Access Requests Settings >Uncheck "Allow members to share the site and individual files and folders."

This way the share function won't work even if the share button is present.

Thanks for the reply. We have turned that off.

The problem is that the share button is still there and users can still use the people picker dialogue box and browse through users and groups. Only to be met with "you cannot share this" in the last step. Why even give them the dialogue box that inevitably leads to an error?

We have a site that is accesible for external users and we don't want them to browse through our AD.

Is there a javascript hack where you manipulate css to make it invisible in some way?

You could use spfx extension to display custom css. Please refer to following steps

Any answer on this? Could someone be more specific on how to remove the "share"-buttons on sharepoint sites?

You could deploy the following solution by the steps metioned in the "Build your first SharePoint Framework Extension" document. And you could add the css to hide share button in the web part.

The only thing about supported platforms on that page is the sentence "You can deploy extensions to SharePoint Online".

My problem resides in an 2019 on premise farm as the title says.

Is SPFx supported on premise?
