[W11] - Fonts instal for all users (Run as Admin)

Good morning

I want to install my fonts on machines dedicated to my users.

Under W10, it was possible, when installing fonts, to install them for everyone (with administrator rights)

I no longer have the case under W11 Do you know how I can proceed?

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

Do you want to install fonts for specific users? Usually, fonts are installed to the system-level font directory (C:\Windows\Fonts), so that the installed fonts are effective for all users, including users with administrator rights and other ordinary rights.

If you want to install fonts for a specific user, you need to create a "Fonts" folder in that specific user's personal folder (such as C:\Users\username), and then put the font files installed for that user into this dedicated in the font directory.

I don't know if earlier versions of Windows 11 behaved as you said, but currently, when installing fonts, the files are installed per user, even if we do it with elevated privileges (the folder is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts). Just copying the files to C:\Windows\Fonts folder doesn't make fonts available, since they must be registered too (I guess it's in the Registry). There seems to be no easy way to install fonts globally (as system fonts).

[Edit] Sorry, I've found a way to install fonts for all users…

Windows 11 24H2 no longer uses Legacy Font option.

Once you install a font for the logged in user

Open the User’s %userprofle%\APPDATA\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts\
Open the font folder
Highlight all
Right Click
Choose Install for all users

If you're having trouble with using the ADOBE PDFMaker / Adobe Print PDF, you can then embed that special font under Advanced Preferences for the Adobe Add-In or Adobe PDF Print driver.

When I copy the Free3of9 barcode font to the C:Windows\Fonts and right click on it-- there is no option to "install for all users". Is this specific to a special font install?

When you drag a font into Windows\Fonts, and even though you see it there, it goes into %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts. Go to that directory and try again. Note that your first right-click on the font choice should be "Show more options." There you will see the choice "Install for all users."

Thank you for this info-- very helpful to understand that the user profile is where the font is installed. After installing for all users - the SSRS render to PDF still did not embed the Free 3of9 barcode font in the report.

SSRS Report designer Run-- shows and prints correctly, but after clicking run and while it is displaying the report, the SSRS print or export to PDF does not embed the font. I am using all the latest version of tools on Windows 11 Pro and running as user with administrative permissions. SQL 2022 Dev edition.

With Windows 11 24H2, Fonts are no longer using Legacy (you can't copy the fonts into C:\Windows\Fonts anymore because that doesn't work)... If 24H2 install is incomplete, the fonts will still be an issue. You want to be certain the update installed completely.

Once you install a font for the logged in user

Open the User’s %userprofle%\APPDATA\Local\Microsoft\Windows\

Open that font folder

Highlight all

Right Click

Choose "Show more options.", then "Install for all users"

If you're having trouble seeing the font after Conversion from PDF to Word / Powerpoint, or with using the ADOBE PDFMaker / Adobe Print PDF, you can then choose to embed that special font under Advanced Preferences for the Adobe Add-In or Adobe PDF Print driver.

Uncheck the “Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts” check-box.

Advanced button - Fonts - Add the special fonts to Always Embed

SAVE and set that new option, then make sure the user has it set when used.

Google Fonts, special downloaded fonts, will all need to be embedded to ensure your documents display nicely.

Microsoft Print to PDF is still the best for creating the PDF from a document.

Thank you for your response-- Install for all users appears to have resolved my problems. Hope this can be documented in SSRS in the future.
