The problem disappeared when I took the SSMS Settings from a colleague using the same version

My SQL Server Management Studio 21.1 does not recognise single key commands such as <Ctrl>E (execute) or <Ctrl>R (show/hide result pane)
I had first installed SSMS 21.1 and something happened after a few days so that when I started SSMS.exe (21.1) I had an empty Visual Studio shell (no sql object explorer or menus).
I tried a Install/Repair of SSMS 21.1 and this recovered the main SQL related functionality but this is when I noticed that classic commands such as <Ctrl>E or <Ctrl>R do not work anymore.
If I click either <Crlt>E or <Ctrl>R I see "(Ctrl+R) was pressed. Waiting for second key of chord..."
I then tried a complete uninstall/install of SSMS 20.1 but this behaviour is not fixed.
Any idea?
PS: I also have SSMS 18 installed and this one behaves normally

21.1? Are you on a preview for SSMS 21? :--)
Under Tools->Options->Environment->Keyboard you can set up key bindings. You need to know the command. For running a query, the command is Query.Execute. Select it and press the desired shortcut key and press Assign.
You need to pay attention to the Use the new shortcut in dropdown. I usually set shortcuts both for Global and SQL Query Editor. You can have more than one shortcut for the same command.
Hi @Eric Mamet 365 ,
Thank you for reaching out and welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
Here is a known issue, please check it out!
If you have not done any customization in SSMS. In Management Studio menu, go to Tools –> Options –> Environment –> Keyboard –> Keyboard –> Apply the following additional keyboard mapping scheme” and choose “Reset”. You would get a confirmation pop-up, click OK there.
If you have done some customization with the settings and want to retain those setting. Go to Management Studio Tools menu and Tools –> Options –> Environment –> Keyboard –> Keyboard Over there, you can choose the command and assign the “shortcuts for selected command”. The list of command can be searched.
In addition, maybe other tool is holding the CTRL+R
combination? You can have a check.
Feel free to share your issue here if you have any confusions.
Best regards,
Lucy Chen
