Azure PublicIP shows from UK under WhoIs even though location is VA East

A new Public IP is created under Azure Gov portal with the location VA East but the whois data shows the UK-Microsoft as the netname and location as GB (Great Britain). Because of this, its been blacklisted with many of our clients as they only allow US based networks.

Problem

I understand that your Azure PublicIP shows it's from UK under WhoIs even though location is US East, and due to this it's been blacklisted with many of our clients as they only allow US based networks.

Solution

This is a discrepancy between the Azure IP address allocation and the WHOIS database information. To resolve these issues as fast as possible and reduced the impact on the business follow these steps:

Verify the IP address with multiple IP geolocation services to see if they all report the same information. Sometimes, third-party IP geolocation services may have outdated or incorrect information.

If the incorrect WHOIS data cannot be resolved quickly, consider requesting a new public IP address within the desired location from Azure. Ensure that this new IP address reflects the correct geographical location in the WHOIS data.

In parallel, you can reach out to your clients and explain the situation, requesting them to temporarily whitelist the current IP address while the issue is being resolved. Provide them with the context and assure them that the IP address is indeed from a US-based Azure region.

Reach out to Microsoft Azure support and report the discrepancy in the WHOIS information for the IP address. To initiate contact with Microsoft Support:

Go to the Azure portal https://portal.azure.com.

Navigate to "Help + support" or search for it in the top search bar.

Create a new support request and provide the details of the issue.

Can you please specify the exact region? Is it Azure Gov Virginia ?

Please use this IP LookUp tool and share the results of what you see.

From our private conversation, we can see

The IP indeed has a geolocation of Virginia only.

From Azure IP Lookup Tool

Location information is published bi-monthly in a geolocation file which denotes where an IP range is currently being utilized (Download Microsoft IP Range GeoLocation from Official Microsoft Download Center).

It shows that the IP block to which your IP is a part of is being utilized in Boydton, Virginia as expected.

I would suggest you to please work with your client to get the IP block whitelisted.
