Check auto-expanding archive is working & detail size

I have enabled AutoExpandingArchive on the tenant that I manage in the hope that I will get a storage limit of 1.5 TB. Is it possible to check the details of the Archive Quota size? Because what I know is that I can only check the status.

You don't get the full 1.5TB quota at once, but by "increments". In addition, the quotas you see above are not valid, once you have AutoExpandingArchiveEnabled set to True, you should ignore them (as detailed for example here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/enable-autoexpanding-archiving#verify-that-auto-expanding-archiving-is-enabled)

To get the actual usage, fetch the (set of) GUID for the aux mailbox in question and use the Get-MailboxStatistics cmdlet. You can find examples here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/exchange-team-blog/office-365-auto-expanding-archives-faq/ba-p/607784

Currently, I'm running an email migration to Microsoft 365 and on the destination email side I have enabled auto-expanding so that the Mailbox Archive Storage has exceeded 100GB.

However, the migration failed due to insufficient storage.

From the link you provided, it means that after the storage is full, we have to wait 7 days for the storage expansion process, right?

Yes, you're correct. With Microsoft's auto-expanding archive feature for Exchange Online, once the storage in the archive mailbox reaches approximately 100 GB, Microsoft will automatically begin to expand the archive storage. However, the expansion process might take up to 30 days, but it generally happens within a seven-day timeframe under normal conditions.

If your migration failed due to insufficient storage, it is likely that the archive expansion had not completed. You'll need to wait until the archive storage has been expanded before continuing with your migration.

The auto-expanding archive feature in Microsoft 365 should indeed start expanding the archive mailbox once it reaches 90 GB, and it can take up to 30 days for the additional storage to be provisioned. However, the expansion process is incremental, and the mailbox won’t immediately jump to 1.5 TB. Instead, it will gradually increase as more storage is needed, up to the maximum limit of 1.5 TB.

If you’ve waited more than 30 days and the storage hasn’t expanded as expected, there might be an issue that needs further investigation. Here are a few steps you can take:

Use the following PowerShell command to check the current size and status of the archive mailbox:
Get-MailboxStatistics

Ensure that the mailbox has the appropriate retention policies applied, as these can affect the archiving process.

You can use the Get-MailboxStatistics cmdlet with the -Archive parameter to retrieve archive storage usage details.

Get-MailboxStatistics -Archive -Identity <UserMailbox> | FL DisplayName, TotalItemSize, ItemCount

Replace <UserMailbox> with the email address or alias of the user whose archive storage you want to check.
