Visual Studio 2022 using high CPU while idle

Hello,

Visual Studio 2022 is using high CPU (>14 % - 35%) while its idle nearly all the time. Sometimes it helps to close all the editor windows but its more like a workaround which helps just for some time and not always.

I did record my CPU consumption via Windows Performance Recorder but couldn identify which process is causing the CPU consumption. I would attach the file but is too large (80mb). Is there a way to provide it to you? Would be great if you could help me with this.

Please restart your PC and check again.

Hi,

I confirm the same problem. My update for Visual Studio is automatic; the problem started with the last update. CPU consumption goes up to 80%. I have opened just 1 window with an HTML and JS file.2023-07-24_7-23-53.jpg

I have the latest VS Community with the same problem. I checked to see if all of my extensions were disabled - they were! Then I noticed that a message about automatic update suggested logging in to VS as administrator. I did that and while observing Task Manager I watched CPU usage drop from around 70 - 80 percent down to around 5 - 10 percent. Then I started my project and the VS and Word stayed low while my project idled. Following a button click to run a feature the percentages jumped as expected but came right down to low idle percentage. Now my editing no longer stalls. I am a happy camper.

I have the same problem, devenv.exe is processing something even when the opened project is on idle and no intellisense or other tool running as background tasks.

This is happening with the visual studio community edition.

It is really annoying having a system on idle and force to close visual studio because it burst a lot of cpu.

Please see the folllowing screeshoot, 31.6% on idle, no background tasks, doing nothing on the IDE, it is just consuming memory.

Also this kind of high CPU usage has come in place with SysInternal not reporting anymore the right amount of CPU usage:

It looks like that something is processing data on a the user PCs and doesn't won't to be spotted. :-P Just kidding.

I can confirm Task Manager is right as i can hear the CPU Fan spinning air, so it implies CPU usage.

I have the same problem using VS 2022 17.7.3.

CPU usage gets very high when I open some C# files.

And I discovered the reason is because inside the main Class, there is a declaration of type Enum or subclass.

If I move them outside the parent Class, or delete them, VS runs normally.

Frustrating.

I report the same issue with 17.7.4.

Tried everything, but whatever I do it's the same problem all over again.
Simple typing one line of code is causing my CPU to go over 80%.

This issue is so serious it makes my VS unusable.

Same with 17.7.5 from which version the problem appeared ? my team needs a downgrade : 80% CPU on big solutions makes VS 2022 unusable.

Hello every body, I have encountered the same problem and for me it was because my firewall was blocking some of the background services of visual studio specially PerfWatson2.exe, when I allowed those services to connect online visual studio 2022 began to settle down as usual

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Please close all running Visual Studio Instances and upgrade your VS2022 to the latest version with Visual Studio Installer.

Then, re-launch your Visual Studio and check the CPU usage.

Besides, it might be caused by installed extensions. You can temporarily disable or uninstall the installed extensions under Extensions > Manage Extensions > Installed.
