Entra ID Registration for Android Devices

I see an Android device registered in my Entra ID. I believe the device is mine as there are not many other models. I do not however remember registering it ever. I do have MS Authenticator setup on it and password less sign-in configured for an account. Does setting up this option automatically register your mobile device? Also, if I remove that option/account will it be removed from Entra ID or do I have to delete it? (I also have other accounts that I use it to authenticate. They are not setup for password less though)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

As long as you have MS Authenticator app, and setup an Entra ID account on the device whether it's on Authenticator App or perhaps Office, the device is automatically registered with Entra.

Deleting a Microsoft Entra registered device in Microsoft Entra ID does not remove registration on the client. It will only prevent access to resources using device as an identity (such as Conditional Access).

If you won't use Authenticator on that device anymore, (or any other Microsoft App) you can remove the account on Authenticator and also delete the device on Entra.

Follow up? Does the owner field get populated by the last account that setup passwordless sign in?

We have an admin user account showing as the owner of a device instead of the normal user account.

Both accounts are in the MS Authenticator and setup to use passwordless sign in. It is an Android Device. Does it have anything to do with passwordless at all?

Is there a way for me to verify that the device in Entra is the same device I think it is?

Hi @Ivan B

The "owner" of the device is the user who registered the device to Entra ID. The action of configuring Passwordless does not register the device per se, there are other ways to do so like requested by Microsoft 365 applications or a company policy. The Owner field would not be overwritten in the case of 2 users trying to register the device, but a duplicated object would be created instead.

You can check if the devices are the same by checking the Device ID information. Go to Azure Portal, Entra ID and then Devices. Search for the desired device and check the Device ID information.

Then, on the device Authenticator app, go to Settings, Device Registration, and clock on the company the device is registered with. You'll see the Device ID info in there for you to compare with the one on Entra.
