How can I adjust the underline spacing in Word or Excel?

As far as I know, you can't control the distance between text and the underline. In Word, the distance will depend on the font you are using.

How is the text displayed in the document?

If the text you want to underline is the only text in the paragraph, here is a link, you may have a look: Moving the Underline Position

• Select all of the text you want to underline, including its leading space. Don't select anything after the text, including a paragraph mark that may be there.

Underline the text, then the leading space and your text should all be underlined.

• Select all of the text you just underlined, but don't include the leading space in the selection.
• Press Ctrl+D > Open Font dialog box > Advanced tab, using the Position drop-down list, choose Raised.
• In the By field, just to the right of the Position drop-down list, choose how much you want the text raised vertically, such as 5 points. Click OK.

If there is text before or after it, the workaround may make it will look strange like following.

But there is currently no good way to adjust it.
