Hi there. I've spent all day trying to install the latest windows update. Initially, I was being met with blue screen loops that could only be escaped by loading into Safe Mode, but have been able to largely avoid them after following some internet advice (although I couldn't say which tweak fixed that).

The problem I'm having is that every time I try to install the new 23H2 KB5041587 update, I can go through the downloading process just fine, my computer begins the restarting process, reboots and gets to ~93% installed, then just tells me that 'something didn't go as planned' and begins reverting the update. This happens every single time I try the update now.

The following are the steps that I have already taken (that I can remember at least) when trying to install the update, with no success:

  • Performing system file and DISM checks/scans
  • Ensuring a stable internet connection
  • Temporarily disabling Windows Firewall
  • Temporarily disabling antivirus protection
  • Temporarily disabling Secure Boot
  • Increasing the size of my EFI System Partition
  • Restarting all related windows services (wuauserv, cryptSvc, BITS, msiserver, App Readiness)
  • Emptying the SoftwareDistribution folder
  • Emptying Windows Update download cache
  • Verifying and updating .NET framework
  • Performing Windows Update troubleshooting
  • Checking Event Viewer for possible errors/conflicts
  • Manually downloading and installing the update via Microsoft Update Catalog

None of the steps taken so far have been successful and I would be extremely appreciative of any help.

    Hi,

It seems like an InPlace upgrade is required.

I hope in services.msc console, the App readiness service is set to running.

    If so,

Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Click Reinstall Now, beside fix problems with Windows update.

    Hello,

What's your system version? Type "winver" in Search Bar to check.

If the system version is not Win23H2, I suggest that check for update to update the system to the latest OS version. Then upgrade to Win23H2.

Or perform an In-place upgrade to install Win23H2.

After that if the issue still insists, I suggest that you may check the CBS.log and Windows Update.log to check related error information about install this update.

    Best Regards,

    Hania Lian
