Windows "Media Player" unable to play audio - additional codec library available?

Windows "Media Player" will not play the audio on one of my audio files. It gives a link to information about codecs but this is of little use. Can anyone please explain whether there is a way to get "Media Player" to play the audio from this file? Windows, "Media Player" and the audio codec information are below but please note the following:

  1. I'm a programmer who has worked on protocols such as SIP and know what codecs are so don't worry about using technical language
  2. VLC can play this file fine and produces audio
  3. My (home) PC is Windows 10 (cannot be upgraded to Windows 11) but is otherwise fully up to date will all updates.

WinVer reports Windows 10, Version 22H2 (OS build 19045.4780)
The media file (according to VLC) contains audio:
Codec: IMA WAV ADPCM Audio (ms)
Sample rate: 32000 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
Media player is version 11.2406.13.0

Thanks for any "next steps" that you can suggest to diagnose and investigate this issue.

Run the integrated Windows Media Player troubleshooter.

As a workaround, you may use VLC.

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run sfc /scannow and hit the Enter key.

Check the Windows Event Viewer for any messages associated with media playback or codec troubles around the time you try and play the file.

Also, check Windows Media Player Logs.
