Because FAT32 has size limitation and you cannot copy big files into bootable USB, I recommend to use rufus to create bootable stick using latest .ISO you can download for example from your Microsoft enterprice agreement.
How to ensure my installation media has the correct KB for device preparation?
Hello!
I've been having issues to trigger the Device preparation instead of the Autopilot/ESP enrollment due to the missing KB.
I've created a new windows media tool creation usb, and tried to use the Windows Insider Program too (Windows Insider Enterprise Edition - Beta - 22621). Both got me to the Autopilot/ESP page instead of Device Preparation.
After doing all the updates and initiating a fresh restart on Intune, I got my Device preparation page.
How can I get a version working on the USB stick directly, please?

Thank you for posting in the Q&A Forums.
- Confirm Windows versions and tools
First, make sure that you are using a version of Windows and tools that support device readiness features. The Windows Insider Program is primarily used to test the latest preview versions of Windows, which may not include or fully support all of the features of device readiness.
- Use official tools
For device readiness, it is recommended to use official tools provided by Microsoft, such as Windows Configuration Designer (WCD) or Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). These tools provide more flexible and powerful configuration options that can help you prepare your device for deployment.
- Prepare a USB flash drive boot image
If you wish to perform device preparation by booting from a USB flash drive, you will need to:
Download a Windows image: Download a Windows image from Microsoft's official website that is suitable for your needs.
Write to USB flash drive using a tool: Write the Windows image to the USB flash drive using a tool such as Rufus or Media Creation Tool, making sure to select the correct boot mode and partitioning scheme.
Add device preparation scripts: If possible, you can add custom scripts or configuration files to the USB flash drive that will be called during the system installation process to perform device preparation tasks. Please note, however, that this usually requires some technical knowledge and in-depth understanding of the Windows installation process.
- Consider using Autopilot or ESP
Although you mentioned that you would like to avoid using Autopilot or ESP, these services provide powerful device enrollment and management capabilities, especially in large-scale deployments. If possible, consider using these services to simplify the device preparation and deployment process.
Best regards
