I am unable to disable Personal Vault. It keeps syncing forever and timing out at 20 minutes. When I go online to One Drive and select settings to disable Personal Vault I do not get the option to disable Personal Vault. I only get the authentication to verify identify over and over again. I have been trying to disable the Personal Vault for weeks with no success. Help appreciated.

When Microsoft released Personal Vault on OneDrive back in September 2019, there was an option to toggle it off. If you toggled it off, all your files in Personal Vault were permanently deleted and unrecoverable. Although you got a warning message your files will be deleted if you toggle it off, some users did not understand the warning message. Users would complain to Microsoft that Personal Vault wiped out their files.

As a result, Microsoft removed the feature to toggle it off. Now the only way a file is permanently deleted from Personal Vault is if you select it and deleted yourself. Microsoft is not forcing you to use Personal Vault, you either use it or not. If you do use it, you will be prompted to setup two factor authentication if you are not using it.

I've been trying to delete my personal vault for weeks and some people in the comments have stated that we just need to delete ourself but I'm unable to do this as well! Every time i attempt deleting it myself withing seconds of pressing the delete button it comes back!

I disagree. I often can't read a file because there is an error with my Personal Vault. I get a message that says mage sure your Onefile is working. What caused it not to work?

It event breaks totally with new iOS application, that just starts new vault ignoring the old one - and event if you try to add something to that "new" vault it adds normal folder inside vault. I have feeling MS does not have Q&A - or did you give it to AI to test ?
IDK what is happening there is so many issues with one drive, I'm out of words - I'm going to find an alternative + you have increased your prices for 40% from last year? and the product is 40% less efficient

This is not an answer. It is a similar problem to what the others have been having but I have a different reason for wanting to disable my Personal Vault. The reason that I would like to disable my Personal Vault is that I keep getting an ERROR indication from OneDrive because my Personal Vault has not been unlocked. When I open File Manager, the first word in the path line is ERROR. I figured out that this was being caused by the my Personal Vault not being unlocked. I can eliminate the ERROR message by deleting my Personal Vault.This does not resolve the problem because the Vault only stays unlocked or deleted for a short time and reappears when I restart my computer. I Googled the problem but that didn't help. Can anyone help me?

Personal vault being locked stalls syncing of other folders. This in itself is a major issue. MSFT seems to be trying to emulate Apple by knowing what I want even if I don't. I don't want personal vault. I want to disable it. I am paying for OneDrive, let me decide what features I need and DON'T need!

It can't be disabled. Microsoft removed the option to disable it across the entire platform for some unknown reason.
Microsoft support doesn't/can't/won't provide a procedure to disable it.
Don't believe me? Get MS Support on the line and see for yourself.

So let me get this straight. I'm the customer, but Microsoft are forcing me to have to unlock a product I no longer want every login and every four hours (your maximum unlock duration) just so OneDrive, a service I PAY you for, will even WORK?

What aren't you telling us? I ask as a senior engineer celebrating my 37th anniversary of full time coding for a living tomorrow, cos all I can think of is "funny story, we used Claude Code to write the Personal Vault and we don't know exactly what code changed cos Claude didn't create pull requests, so we just have 140,576 comits to main and we can't figure it out and Claude refuses to fix it, calls it his magnum opus" 🤬

All you need to do is go to one drive in file explorer and click on vault. It will have you verify identity ti turn on and unlock vault. Once it's unlocked press shift while right clicking the vault folder and press delete. Abra freaking Kadabra

OK. So when it's deleted OneDrive sync still stops because the (non existent) vault is locked. And there's no way to create it!

When I unlock the Personal Vault (PV), then hold down Shift and right click I get and error message that reads "Something went wrong with your Personal Vault, Your Personal Vault is locked, To access your Personal Vault unlock it again." The options in the error message are Unlock or Close. I click Unlock, verfiy myself. File Explorer opens I navigate to PV again (the icon is lighter that other icons) I repeat the original process and I get the same error message. If I choose Close the folder disappears but I still have an error message on my task bar that says my PV is not up to date and it requires me to unlock my PV becasue it cannot sync my other files till I do. When I unlock the PV it then creates a new PV in File Explorer.

I found this in an aricle on the MS site: "Important: You cannot delete the Personal Vault folder itself as it is a protected area in OneDrive, but you can delete the files inside it. Also, Personal Vault files are blocked from sharing and have extra security measures that may affect file management." Interesting and frustrating

I tried all suggestions already, there IS a problem - or at least there was when I commented.

I DID REMOVE MY PERSONAL VAULT IN THE END THO.

I'd already emptied it, and had to unlock it every time before synching would even start (NOT acceptable behaviour, YOU NEVER CLEARLY ALERT THAT SYNC IS DISABLED) but disconnecting this device from OneDrive and reconnecting fixed it. I'm sure I'd tried that before, but I was moving from one laptop to the other so this may have been the first time One Drive had NO devices connected to it. I dunno. Maybe MS fixed their mess in the meantime.,

I'm almost certainly moving to Linux and my existing Google Cloud, Microsoft have zero discipline or rigour, I'm in my 38th year of writing code for a living, recently moving to full stack C#/Razor from Java and Microsoft are the WORST for destroying common sense - an extremely experienced C# guy I followed while upskilling published an article on Medium lamenting that C# is now so confusing with "5 ways to define a variable" and many many examples where there are now countless ways of doing everything, and he's right, it's so bad that when I asked Claude Code to reformat a class I was no longer able to understand it.

Every method became a nightmare of lamdas or something because apparently there's 300 ways of defining methods too. Microsoft don't have standards. Only half of your devs will be able to maintain the old parts of your code base, and the other half who won't be able to do that will be writing new code the older devs can't maintain.

That's the most irresponsible thing you could ever do to a language, and this absurd Personal Vault thing just adds to my increasing concern that one day, possibly very soon, it will all unravel.

Yeah, Linux is looking GOOD - especially for gaming. Microsoft making MSi replace the right control with a CoPilot AI button is the last straw for me. Let us CHOOSE to use CoPilot, forcing it on us is putting AI adoption back a decade.

The only reason I'm not using Linux is because there's no Office 365. I've just ordered a QNAP NAS device and I'll be moving from OneDrive to local NextCloud when it arrives.

I did remove Personal Vault but when I restarted OneDrive it created it again ans stalled syncing. Why can't they simply provide an option to not use the bloody thing!

I agree with your last comment. They're trying to emulate Apple (We'll tell you what you want). Just like my first wife, "when I want your opinion I'll give it to you"

Disabling OneDrive Personal Vault

Solution:

Go to OneDrive online and navigate to Settings > Options > Personal Vault.
If you see the "Disable Personal Vault" option, toggle it off and confirm after verifying your identity (if prompted).
- Note: Disabling permanently deletes all Personal Vault data. Make sure to have backups.
Option Missing?
- Reach out to Microsoft Support for help with disabling or explore alternative methods.
- Temporary Workaround: Move files from the Personal Vault folder to regular OneDrive storage. This doesn't disable the Vault but removes files from extra security.

NO, this is not helpful. Your solutions do not work. The problem is far worse. Even though the vault is empty it stops all files and folders from syncing, holding everything hostage. This morning I had 67 messages saying the vault was locked adn ONe Drive could not sync. I had to unlock all before I had access to my one drive folder. This is ridiculous, sloppy and incompetent coding and really really bad business. A fatal flaw as far as I am concerned. I am giving them one week to find and distribute a fix to everyone who made the mistake of "unlocking it" for the first time. My business depends on my ability to keep one drive syncing constantly and open constantly. Wow, talk about a sabotage bomb. Shame on you Microsoft.

My personal vault was empty and it kept popping up windows to tell me it was shutting down if I didn't use it. I didn't use it and it still popped those windows up. So, I put a file in it and it's no longer popping up - yet....

Put the option back. If the user attempts to disable the vault and there are files in the vault, tell the user to empty the fault first. Only empty vaults can be disabled.
No more people saying that Microsoft deleted their files when the vault was disabled, as only empty vaults can be disabled.

I reached out to Microsoft support…let them remote into my PC. Couldn’t solve it, sent me a link to OneDrive support, circular link, took me back to where I started with support. There is nothing in my personal vault. Login times out after 20 minutes, which then keeps all other OneDrive syncing hostage until I unlock personal vault …every 20 minutes. Please, let me get rid of personal vault. I am an adult, and can make the decision to permanently delete the (nonexistent) files. Just want sync to work as designed without having to unlock personal vault every 20 minutes, which is the max timeout. Perhaps provide the option to unlock personal vault forever, and sync will work as designed. Or…re-enable the “off” toggle, and let users decide if they want to permanently delete the contents. Thank you

As even you suspect, that option HAS been removed, as was the online option under 'Personal Vault' which now has no option, and nothing fixes this nightmare.

Every AI thought there were several ways but MS have removed them all, one after the other, it's like they're hiding a problem where removing it has side effects their 12yo developers didn't foresee because why else would they remove every single option for a PAYING CUSTOMER to opt out of a feature having not been warned it suspends synching while locked?

THE WHOLE POINT OF THAT VAULT IS THAT IT WILL BE LOCKED WHEN YOU AREN'T UPDATING IT.

I'm now pretty sure they've coded themselves into a corner with this one, that removing it for one customer requires some fiddling of config or SQL or something on a case by case basis

The issue with the personal vault link is that it always shows as unable to sync. If you are not using it and the folder is empty, I would suggest keeping the shortcut link online only.

Right click on the personal vault shortcut link and select "free up space". That should prevent your one drive app from showing the "sync error".

THANK YOU FOR THIS. Good lord this was annoying. I'd delete the shortcut, onedrive4 would recreate it, insist the name "Personal Vault" wasn't not allowed, refuse to sync the shortcut, and then never complete syncing, firing up my CPU all the while. I managed to restrict Onedrive to the low powered cores of my Ryzen - so it was only burning 17 watts rather than 54 - but even so it was RIDICULOUS.

Hey Rich, not specifically but I asked ChatGPT and, out of the 'clutching at straws' solutions it came up with, it had a registry hack. I don't have this issue so I haven't tried it but might be worth the risk.

The other thing it said was to reinstall OneDrive but I suspect you might have done that already.

You can try hiding or disabling the Vault's appearance in Explorer:

Open Registry Editor (regedit)

Navigate to:

objectivec
Copy
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EDC978D6-4D53-4B2F-A265-5805674BE568}

If it exists, change the System.IsPinnedToNameSpaceTree DWORD value to 0.

Comment to Ted McConnell - Lo and Behold - since you posted your comment which was going to be my answer to the problem, Microsoft has eliminated the disable option from the screen. So that proves that Microsoft wishes to hold everyone hostage to this personal vault for some reason. If this position continues, I will consider getting an Apple computer when I am forced to give up my Windows 10 soon.

As advised above, I tried switching from Chrome to Edge, but it does not work for me either. I am fed up with being harassed by the, for me useless, Personal Vault, which I do not want to use.

TURN OFF THE PERSONAL VAULT!!! I have no way of disabling this feature. Sick and tired of Microsoft forcing us using this worthless feature. TURN THAT OFF!

There is nothing in support artical to disable the personal vault, please explain how this is done as the vault get sync warning all the time and I really do not want the personal vault, so how to I disable ut please.
