We are using write filter on Windows 11 education and recently when uwf is enabled, all of the systems will will reboot to a blue screen error for thread exception for uwfs.sys. The only way we found to recover from this is to reboot to a windows recovery disk and rename uwfs.sys.

We are not sure what changed where. I have checked the file and registry exclusions. We see nothing in minidump or event logs of the incident.

Any advise or help will be greatly appreciated!

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to Unified Write Filter Blue Screen.

The uwfs.sys file is associated with the Unified Write Filter (UWF) in Windows. This filter helps protect your drives by redirecting writes to a virtual overlay

Review your UWF settings and make sure all necessary files and registry keys are excluded properly. Incorrect exclusions can lead to system instability.

Open a command prompt window by selecting Run as administrator and type verifier to open the Driver Verifier Manager.

Update your drivers, if Driver Verifier has detected a specific one, you can update that driver and see if that fixes the problem.

Press Windows + 'R' and type devmgmt.msc to open Device Manager.

Locate the device and double-click on it to expand.

Double-click on the driver and go to the Drivers tab.

Click "Update Driver" and select "Automatic Search" for drivers.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Molly
