What to do if there’s no BitLocker Recovery Key for Device?

Hello. I received the BitLocker blue screen when I turned on my laptop the morning of the CrowdStrike event (7/19/24).

I don’t remember ever setting up BitLocker but followed the prompts from Microsoft Support to access my recovery key. I found my device and received the attached message: No BitLocker recovery key found for this device.

Any solutions?

    Hello Brenda Avery,

thank you for posting on the Microsoft Community Forums.

Recent system updates or configuration changes may cause incompatibility with BitLocker. To find your BitLocker recovery key, you will need to follow the steps in Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support.

    Important:

    • If you are unable to locate the BitLocker recovery key and can't revert any configuration change that might have caused it to be required, you’ll need to reset your device using one of the Windows recovery options. Resetting your device will remove all of your files.
    • Microsoft support is unable to provide, or recreate, a lost BitLocker recovery key.

    Kind regards,

    Lei

Brenda, I feel your pain! I too got locked out of my computer and Microsoft is saying one doesn't exist. It's ridiculous that there's no back way of getting in as opposed to having to wipe your computer clean, especially when people have no idea this is even a thing to have made note about the original key to begin with! I have a Lenovo, do you? Apparently they're the ones to blame to have put through an update that changed the BIOS file that was so significantly different to have caused this to happen. This will be my last Lenovo because of this!!

Microsoft, this is a very poor way to support your customers! We should be able to unlock this atrocious lockdown mechanism with simply filling in some personal information as opposed to relying on people, who don't even know this exists, to copy a 48-digit number down and keep around forever more. Simply ridiculous in this day and age!!!

This is unacceptable Lei. YOU encrypted our computers without our knowledge, did not give us a key, and now you want us to just delete everything??

    Apple here I come.

Completely agree with you my friend,It's ridiculous to even imagine that we have to keep the key safe with us without much knowledge of it .And I do have a microsoft account but there is no recovery key details mentioned in it .Also if it's so important, the company should provide it along with purchase invoice or in written document with each product .Or provide us the option to regenerate the key .It's stupidity from the customer end to trust the companies who forget to guide the non IT professionals what to keep stored with the product.
