Millions of files smaller than 4kb are created in “C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA” and they’re not getting cleared automatically on Windows Server 2019.

Unable to delete these file even logged in as "administrator"

Could anyone please advise what are these file and how can we delete them ?

Thanks

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

The files in the "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA" directory are usually associated with CryptoAPI's RSA key containers. They are used to store the encryption keys that Windows and other applications use to encrypt and decrypt data.

Accumulation of a large number of small files in this directory is unusual and may indicate that an application or process is not properly managing the creation and deletion of these keys.

To resolve the inability to delete these files, first log in as an administrator, then take ownership of these files and grant yourself the necessary permissions to delete them.

However, care should be taken when removing encryption keys, as this may affect the functionality of systems or applications that rely on them.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Molly
