Bitlocker recovery key doesn’t unlock computer

I can’t seem to get live support over the phone or online because it directs me to the bitlocker recovery instructions but they don’t work. I’ve entered the recovery key multiple times and i always get directed to the automatic repair screen stating that my PC didn’t start correctly. I select restart and I’m prompted with the BitLocker recovery screen again. I called HP support because I have an HP Envy 360 and they walked me through a hardware test which concluded that nothing was wrong with the hardware but they refuse to help me further since it’s a software issue unless I pay for their support plan. Can someone tell me what I need to do to access my computer again?

    Hello NNEA45,

thank you for posting on the Microsoft Community Forums.

Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Check if you're entering the correct recovery key: Make sure that you're entering all the characters correctly and in the right order. You need following the steps in Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support to recover your BitLocker recovery key firstly.
    2. Automatic Startup Repair:
      1. Power off your laptop.
      2. Power it back on and immediately start pressing the "F11" key repeatedly to access the advanced startup options.
      3. Navigate to "Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair", Follow the prompts.
    3. Command Prompt:
      1. In the same advanced startup options, go to "Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt".
      2. Once in the Command Prompt, you can try to unlock the drive manually by typing:
      manage-bde -unlock C: -RecoveryPassword YOUR-RECOVERY-KEY-HERE
      1. After unlocking, you can attempt to repair the boot files by running:
      bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /scanos bootrec /rebuildbcd
    4. System Restore: From the advanced startup options, select "Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore", follow the steps to restore the system to an earlier point in time (if you've set up any restore points in the past).

    Hope it helps.

    Kind regards,

    Lei

    Hi Lei,

Thank you SO much!! I have gotten into my computer now but chrome won’t open for some reason. Microsoft edge seems to open but I mainly use chrome. Is there something else I need to do in order to access chrome?

    Hello,

I went through the advanced options and it says the password successully unlocked volume C:, then I tried the bootrec /fixmbr and that was successful. After that nothing happens. When I closed the window the computer goes back to Bitlocker. What else can I do to get into my laptop without having to restore it?
