Summary:

I encountered an issue while configuring a VPN on a fresh installation of Windows Server Datacenter 2025 VPS. The Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) and the Remote Access Connection Manager services keep crashing with errors pointing to svchost.exe_RemoteAccess and ipnathlp.dll. This setup works perfectly on Windows Server Datacenter 2022 with the exact same configuration. I need assistance in diagnosing and resolving this issue.

Details:

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Installed Windows Server Datacenter 2025 on a fresh VPS.
  2. Configured Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) to set up a VPN.
  3. The service terminates unexpectedly shortly after starting, and the following error logs are recorded in the Event Viewer.

Error Details (From Event Viewer):

Faulting application name: svchost.exe_RemoteAccess, version: 10.0.26100.1150, time stamp: 0xfdace0d9 Faulting module name: ipnathlp.dll, version: 10.0.26100.2161, time stamp: 0x5cc1c7df Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000000000008501f Faulting process id: 0x20B8 Faulting application start time: 0x1DB3D0960DBFA67 Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ipnathlp.dll Report Id: 654fa963-3803-4202-8981-00e6ac6ed472 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:

Service Behavior:

  1. The Routing and Remote Access service terminates with the following message:
The Routing and Remote Access service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

  2. The Remote Access Connection Manager service also terminates with a similar message:
The Remote Access Connection Manager service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5 time(s).

Environment:

  • Windows Server Datacenter 2025: Experiencing the issue.
  • Windows Server Datacenter 2022: The exact same configuration works without any errors.
  • The issue occurs immediately after setting up and starting the VPN service.

Attempts to Resolve:

  1. Verified all configurations were identical on both server versions.
  2. Checked for missing dependencies or updates; none were found.
  3. Tried restarting the service, but it continues to fail.

Questions:

  1. Is this a known issue with Windows Server Datacenter 2025?
  2. Does this error indicate a potential bug with ipnathlp.dll or the Remote Access components?
  3. Are there any additional configurations or patches required for VPN setup on Windows Server 2025?
  4. What steps should I take to debug or resolve this issue further?

Any insights or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Hello

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

Known Issue: This appears to be a known issue with Windows Server Datacenter 2025. There have been reports of similar problems where the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) and Remote Access Connection Manager services crash due to issues with the ipnathlp.dll module.

Potential Bug: The error logs you provided suggest a potential bug in the ipnathlp.dll component, which is responsible for network address translation (NAT) and other network-related functions.

Patches and Updates: Microsoft has acknowledged this issue and released a fix in the update KB5046617, which was made available on November 12, 2024. Ensure that your server is fully updated with the latest patches, including this specific update.

Workaround: As a temporary workaround, some administrators have found success by disabling the NAT feature on RRAS servers until the fix is applied. This might help stabilize the services until you can apply the necessary updates.

By applying the latest updates and potentially disabling NAT temporarily, you should be able to stabilize your VPN setup on Windows Server Datacenter 2025.

    Best Regards,

    Wesley Li
