Windows server free upgrade costs from Windows server 2019 to 2022

We are a csp partner. I have purchased windows server 2022 standard 16 core pack in perpetual model and the customer needs the 2019 standard version. This can be selected in the options of course and get the key for 2019 version. But the customer may require the 2022 version later after some years and he has asked if the cost is free for upgrading. So, is it possible to get the key again from the same loaded perpetual license for the same customer for the version selection of 2022.

    Hello Pasindu Soysa

According to Microsoft's policy, you can upgrade to Windows Server 2022 for free if you have purchased a license for Windows Server 2019. This means that you can upgrade to Windows Server 2022 with the perpetual license you purchased without paying any additional fees. In addition, you can get the key again from the same perpetual license loaded by the same customer to upgrade to Windows Server 2022 if needed. Note that this only applies to perpetual licenses, not subscription licenses.Image

    Hope it helps.

    Kind regards,

    Lei

    Hello Dave,

You can find the downloads here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/download-windows-server-2022

Chances are that you will want to run the server upgrade from within Windows rather than burn it to a USB and boot from there to do a clean install. Otherwise you will also want to see Microsoft's reply to my question to make sure that your Server 2019 key will be valid for a clean install of Server 2022 prior to performing the installation. From my understanding this is not a risk with the in-place upgrade as it will use the existing license key.

    Hope that helps!

    Hello,

We would like to upgrade to Windows Server 2022 from 2019 but cannot clear up 64 gigs of space on our C:\ to perform the upgrade, as only 100gb is available total and most of it is used by Windows and by system files. We are at 17 free gigs and the absolute most we can clear up is an additional 15 gigs or so, possible 25 if we start cleaning up system files that may or may not be able to be removed.

Due to this, a clean install seems to be our only option. If we do a clean install of Windows Server 2022 from the via the same installation media that was downloaded to perform the upgrade, will we be able to enter the Windows Server 2019 key to activate Windows Server 2022, or will we be forced to purchase a 2022 license even though we have a 2019 license that should allow for in-place upgrade free of charge? I am worried about installing the new OS and then being unable to activate Windows.

Thank you in advance for your help, and please let me know if I should open a new question for this instead.

    Thank you,
    Noelle Hockaday
