I have a WIN10 desktop and just bought a WIN 11 laptop. I want to be able to work on (read/write) data files that are on my desktop while using my laptop in the same way that i can use my work computer to access files on the work network. For example, I have Quicken installed on the desktop along with all the data files. i want to be able to run Quicken on my laptop using the data files that are on my desktop. I've been reading about 'file sharing' but that seems to be aimed at moving files from one computer to another which is not what i want to do. Its confusing whether i need a 'home network', a LAN, NAS, etc. All my computers are connected to the ATT wireless wifi router.

I have the same issue here, and in my case one is windows 11, the other is windows 10 (both are pro version). Nothing I try, including changing my passwords has made a lick of difference. Network discovery has always been on and the windows defender firewall does not have any log of it blocking any connections. They are both set to Private, on the same workgroup, all of the normal "check here" items have been double- and triple-checked at this point. The error sometimes says the username and password are wrong, and sometimes it says that my user account is locked and unable to login (the latter I have already changed to never disable the ability to login for X number of incorrect login attempts set to zero). Everywhere I look for guidance, the information is so mish-mash and poorly written/presented that it is practically unusable to anyone who hasn't recently taken any MSDN courses or has got one of those newfangled Microsoft certifications. It's infuriating to say the least!

    Hello,

To work on data files that are on your desktop from your laptop, you can set up file sharing between the two devices. File sharing allows you to access and modify files on one computer from another computer on the same network. In your case, since both your desktop and laptop are connected to the same ATT wireless wifi router, you can use file sharing to access your desktop files from your laptop.

    Regards,

    Zunhui

thanks Zunhui, I've shared the Documents directory on both computers to a private network. From my laptop (WIN 11) file explorer i can access the desktop documents, get them open and work with them, so no problem. However from my desktop (Win 10), in file explorer I can see the laptop but when i try to access it, i get a message that i don't have access rights. It brings up a log-in screen but i can't log in. I"ve tried logging in with both the laptop and desktop credentials but neither work. any idea what is blocking going from desktop to laptop?
