.rdp files not opening

We run a remote desktop deployment on Windows 2022 server, to provide access to remote apps on our servers.

We have had a number of reported issues (which we can reproduce), which is that after a while, opening the rdp file that is downloaded from rdweb, whether in the browser download box or in Explorer, the rdp file no longer opens.

This seems to happen after a user has closed all of their remote apps, but still has a connection in the 'RemoteApps and Desktop connections' taskbar tile.

The only way we have been able to resolve this, is by closing the 'RemoteApps and Desktop connections' and 'Remote Desktop Connection' background task in task manager. (or restarting the machine)

Right-clicking and 'closing all connections' to the connection broker is not fixing anything

    Hey Karlie,
The RDP file we download doesn't pop up in the 'RemoteApps and Desktop Connections' app

We only open the RDP file from the browser downloads window, or from Windows Explorer

Clicking on these files on our Windows 11 machine, and connecting to Windows 2022 Remote Desktop Deployment does nothing.
It's like the RDP client is failing to launch
Our only workaround for this currently is to close the 'RemoteApps and Desktop connections' and 'Remote Desktop Connection' background tasks in the task manager. (or restarting the machine)

    Thanks for your help
Hoping we can get this resolved so that we don't have to 'reset' the service with task manager, as our non-technical users will struggle with this

    Hi Alex

"The RDP file we download doesn't pop up in the 'RemoteApps and Desktop Connections' app"

I'm having difficulty understanding this sentence. as I understand, when you download an RDP file, it's usually a standalone file that you can open and use to establish a remote desktop session to a specific remote computer. It doesn't automatically integrate into the "RemoteApps and Desktop Connections" app.

    Hi Alex Burling

Are you accessing same remote application from different approaches?

As I understand it, while you can use both an RDP file downloaded from RDWeb and RemoteApps and Desktop Connections to launch the same remote application, they might not create separate connections.

    Regards,

    Karlie

    Hey DarkerFirestar,

Unfortunately running the .rdp file in mstsc doesn't provide any output, or open the remote app

    When it's failing try running:

    mstsc path\to\yourfile.rdp

    See what output that gives.
