Which server is best for my requirements?

Hello, Y'all!

I retired 13 years ago after a Lotta years as a systems engineer, and I find myself bored, and missing the game.

I have a desktop, that's my primary PC, and a laptop, that's had more OS's on it than I can remember. (Of course at my age, I have to have a calendar event to remind me of our anniversary.)

I also have several Linux virtual machines, and a couple of Windows machines.

I wanna install Windows 2022 server on the laptop, and make it an AD DC, as well as a file server that I can back my primary PC, and the wife's laptop to. OpenSuse can actually be an AD DC, so I wanna play with that too.

What confuses me, is this bit about the number of CPU cores. The laptop has 4 cores.

If I buy 2022, standard, am I golden?

Sorry, if this is a stupid question, but at the age of 79, on a fixed income, I don't need to be wasting, money.

    Hi BrianJAdams,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community Forums.

When considering the installation and operation of Windows Server 2022, selecting the right hardware configuration is crucial for ensuring system stability and performance. Below are the recommended device configurations, which you can adjust based on your specific usage needs:

These configurations are suitable for small applications or test environments:

    • CPU: 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, supporting 64-bit instruction set
    • RAM: Minimum 512 MB (2 GB recommended for graphical user interface installation)
    • Storage: At least 32 GB
    • Network: At least one Ethernet adapter, supporting gigabit network card

This setup is suitable for small to medium-sized businesses or more complex scenarios, such as file servers, domain controllers, etc.:

    • CPU: 2 or more 2.0 GHz 64-bit processors, at least 4 cores
    • RAM: 16 GB or more
    • Storage: System drive at least 120 GB SSD, data drives as needed
    • Network: At least one gigabit Ethernet adapter, multiple adapters recommended for redundancy and load balancing

Suitable for large-scale deployments, virtualization, database servers, and other high-performance and reliability needs:

    • CPU: 2 or more 3.0 GHz 64-bit processors, 8 or more cores
    • RAM: 32 GB or more, may need more based on specific applications
    • Storage: System drive 256 GB or larger SSD, data drives and storage systems configured as needed, such as RAID 5/6/10
    • Network: Multiple gigabit or 10-gigabit Ethernet adapters, supporting network redundancy and load balancing
    • Additional: Consider redundant power supplies and efficient cooling systems to ensure stable operation under high load
    • Virtualization (e.g., Hyper-V): Requires more CPU cores and memory, 64 GB or more RAM recommended.
    • Database Servers: Requires faster storage and more memory, enterprise-grade SSD or NVMe storage recommended.
    • File Servers: Requires larger storage capacity and higher network bandwidth.
    • Hardware Compatibility: Ensure all hardware devices are on the Windows Server 2022 compatibility list.
    • Backup and Recovery: Consider configuring hardware RAID or using dedicated backup solutions to ensure data safety.
    • System Redundancy: Configure power redundancy (dual power supplies) and network redundancy (multiple network adapters) to enhance system reliability.

Depending on your specific needs and budget, you can adjust the configurations above to achieve the best performance and cost balance.

    Best regards

    Neuvi Jiang
