File won't save because a Read-Only user has it open?

We have a user "ShopFloor" that has Read Only access to a certain folder on the server. When I go in to "Computer Managment" on the server, it shows the user has the file open but in a read-only state and yet each time other users go to overwrite this file, I have to go in to the server and close that file out.

From my experience this should not happen. At past companies I've worked at we have not had this issue. Just this one.

Why is this? Any ideas how to "fix" this?

Thank you!

    Hi Keegan Bear,

I'm here to help with your problem.

Does this happen every time? If the read-only user closes the file, can another user write to it?

Also, try again to see if other users can write to the file if the read-only user has the other file open.

If this happens only with the file and not with other files, then this file may be broken...?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

    Yu

    Thanks for the reply!

Actually this happens every time we try to modify a pdf. I also found out it happens when any "Read Only" has it open. Even on multiple programs. We can't even change the file name while a read only user has it open.

I am at a loss. Oh and interesting... I can change the file name on the server even while this user has it open but not on our domain computers?

Thank you for your quick response.

First of all, I would like to confirm the permissions. Are the permissions on the folder set to read-only? Does the user belong to any other groups that have write permissions? You can check from the security tab of the folder.

And, I also checked the operation in my environment and the following results:

    • The session remains even if the file is closed.

    * The left side is when the file is opened and the right side is when the file is closed.

    • You can delete the session with the following command. net session /delete

I feel it was caused by the unnecessary session remaining. Can you try deleting the session and see if the event improves?

    Best regards,

    Yu

I double checked permissions and verified that the user is not in another OU, group, etc.

I even went to the user and tried to modify the file and it tells me I do not have permissions to change it. I cannot change file names, add files, or delete.

Since this is a file server, I don't want to run net session /delete as there are hundreds of files open. But I have no doubt this would take care of the issue but I would have to run it every time any user opens a file we want to change.

I really do appreciate your help! Honestly!

If the delete /session command is not available, you can delete the session from computer management.

Right click and select "Close Open File" like below.

If this does not resolve the problem, it may be a problem on the file server side.

    Thank you
