We have an issue where multiple azure virtual desktop users (virtual desktop is running Windows 10) when joining a meeting cannot use the microphone until they switch to another audio device and switch it back. Once the user has switch the microphone back it will work but sometime during the call it will drop the microphone. The users are once again force to switch their microphone from another device and back. Our users are forced to perform this task every time they start another meeting as well.

  • some cases a usb/bluetooth mic will work as long as they are are set as default before a user logs into an their virtual desktop. I will stop working if the usb/bluetooth device is disconnected during the virtual desktop session. (I have one of the computer that we cannot get this work with, when trying to use a virtual desktop from it)
  • all devices use Realtek audio drivers for built in microphone and speakers.

I have this same issue with a user working with Teams on client VDI.

"The issue is that when I am using Teams on my Azure VDI, my microphone must be switched to a different device then back again in order to work. Doing this on every call is less than convenient."

We had a case opened with MSFT for at least 3 weeks now. In that time, we managed to come up with a very specific scenario/use case that will always ensure the mic doesn't work. This use case being:

    • Dell Latitude (mostly 5420s)
    • Windows 11 client OS
    • Latest version of Teams on client machine
    • Use of Remote Desktop Client for Windows (NOT the website method of access) from client machine
    • Latest Web RTC and Teams on AVD VM
    • Teams in AVD shows as "Teams optimized for AVD" and one to one audio call in Teams

Dell/Realtek released a newer version of the audio driver. The driver version # in the Windows client GUI does not change, but the release date does. This was released on April 11, 2023. Downloading the latest Realtek driver from Dell, and installing it from the exe method (must be run as an admin) which invokes the update process as: uninstall existing audio driver, reboot, install latest audio driver, reboot - AND updating the Remote Desktop Client for Windows to the latest release DOES resolve the mic issue.

Our assumption is that the codec being used when Teams is "optimized" for AVD is the issue, and Realtek caught up as of mid April.

Here's the Dell driver information as it shows up on the client side for reference

    Driver Date: 2/14/2023

    Driver Version: 6.0.9481.1
