Windows 11 24h2 update completely broke webcam passthrough (and probably USB in general) via RDP

Hi all, as the title states i can't find a way to get the integrated webcam (and actually ANY USB WEBCAM) passed to any of the 24h2 machines i RDP to.

This started only after the 24h2 update of windows 11 with any USB/integrated camera while i'm connected via RDP. this happens since the 24h2 earliest update, the one forced by microsoft and then retired. no matter what i tried the passthrough of the webcam to a 24h2 guest via RDP is completely broken. in some VMs i connect using Citrix, and i've contacted their support but they can't do much since it's a 24h2 RDP issue.

with citrix support we observed that the wrong resolution is passed through via RDP however even forcing the webcam resolution manually in the guest registry didn't make a change. This happened though using the Citrix HDX Tools which uses microsoft RDP to passthrough the USBs.

Yes local resources are enabled in the rdp advanced settings, and yes i've tried other browsers like firefox, chrome and new edge but still i can't get the webcam working.

in this screenshot "Other supported Plug and Play (PnP) devices is not active but i've triedto enable it and anything inside it and still it doesn't work.

I got the same issue. On Citrix Workspace the camera in Teams shows only black screen. On previous compilation 23H2 everything's worked perfectly fine.

The built in camera in my notebook doesn't work either

hi, thanks for the answer and the suggestions, the issue i have have never happened before the update so the only way to fix this issue would be for microsoft ti fix the software however, since the release of the 24h2 i've never seen this bug fixed. 3 patch tuesday are past and no fix has been rolled out.

i wonder how it is even possible that a big feature like RDP doesn't get tested enough before rolling out an update.

    1. my devices are constantly up to date
    2. network settings are fine, if i connect to a 22h2 version of windows 11 everything works flawlessly
    3. host and guest are allowed to use camera

as per point number 2, i'll try but i don't have much faith in the possibility that i might work, i will update you if it does or does not.

just a quick reply, the suggested point 2 is not working as i expected, just to let you know and as i have already stated in my post everything works flawlessly if i connect to a version of windows 11 prior to 24h2, so this fix have to be addressed directly by microsoft.

how is it possible that microsoft rolls out an update this big with such weird issues?

    Hello,

The Windows 11 24H2 update does have some known issues, including webcams and USB devices not working properly via RDP, and here are some suggestions you can try to alleviate your issues:

    1. Make sure your webcam and USB device drivers are up to date. Sometimes, updating the driver can fix the compatibility issue.
    2. On the Remote Desktop session host, open Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) with administrator privileges to enable device and resource redirection. Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Device and Resource Redirection.
    3. Make sure that the network settings are not blocking RDP access to the device, sometimes firewalls or security software may interfere with the functionality of RDP.
    4. Make sure that both the remote system and the local system have permission enabled for the camera and microphone. For example, check your privacy settings in Windows settings to make sure apps are allowed to access your camera.

Hopefully, these suggestions will help you solve your problem. If the problem persists, it is recommended to continue to pay attention to Microsoft's official updates and fixes. If the issue significantly impacts usage, you can consider rolling back to an older version and temporarily disabling Windows Update.

    I hope this information helps.

    Best regards,

    Jingjing Wu
