Windows Licensing Issues Production & DR server - Software Assurance

There is a server of 128 cores and there is a Disaster recovery server in the passive mode with 128 cores for this production server. We have licensed the production server with Datacenter licenses for 128 cores with the subscription-based licenses from the CSP model.

As I have researched only partial benefits from Software Assurance is included in the CSP model subscription-based Windows server licenses. Below benefits are included as I have checked.

  • Azure Hybrid Benefit
  • Disaster Recovery rights
  • Semi-Annual Channel releases of Windows Server
  • downgrade rights

The issue here is are we required to separately license the DR server as well to go with the compliance? Or else can we use the Disaster recovery rights benefits and use the licenses assigned to the Production server as well for the DR server.

    according to Microsoft's licensing terms, Disaster Recovery rights are included with Windows Server Datacenter licenses. This means that you can use the same licenses assigned to the production server for the DR server without needing to separately license it.

    However, it's important to note that the DR server must be in a passive mode and only used for disaster recovery purposes. Additionally, you must have Software Assurance coverage for the production server to be eligible for Disaster Recovery rights.

    Hi Lei,

    Thanks for the details provided. The licenses we have offered is the subscription based licenses of Windows server in the CSP model. There are documentation mentioning that the below benefits of Software assurance are available in this model.

    • Azure Hybrid Benefit
    • Disaster Recovery rights
    • Semi-Annual Channel releases of Windows Server
    • downgrade rights

    Will this cover the benefit of Disaster recovery right you have mentioned above?
