2 - Instances of Windows server 2022 / 21H2 failing windows updates. Showing Error encountered - last checked 9/12/23. Have gone through the normal channels. Have run the troubleshooters. I have run SFC and variants. I have manually installed kb5031364 for Server 2022 21H2. I have run DISM tools. We have other Windows 2022 / 21H2 servers having no issues at all. Need a fix.

The reason you can't install the September patch is that you have manually installed the latest patch (KB5031364), and the latest patch contains the previous patch, so you will be prompted that the update is not applicable.

Is the auto-update option turned on?

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type "gpedit.msc" and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
    3. In the left pane, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
    4. In the right pane, double-click on "Configure Automatic Updates."
    5. Select the "Enabled" option.
    6. Choose the desired automatic update option from the drop-down menu. You can choose to automatically download and install updates, or to download updates but let the user choose when to install them.
    7. Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

When you use IISCrypto, select the "Best Practices" security levekls for Windows Server 2022 and then reboot. Everything will start working immediately.

    Hello Jay Scott (jscott)

Based on the troubleshooting steps you have already taken; I would recommend trying the following:

1.In services.msc, are Windows update service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service open?

    2.Whether the network is connected?

3 Check if there are any third-party antivirus or firewall software installed on the affected servers and temporarily disable them to see if it resolves the issue.

    1. Check if there are any pending hardware driver updates and install them manually in the Device Manager.

    Best Regards,

    Hania Lian
