SharePoint Import Migration API - Azure Storage Account Networking

Hi,
We are using the SharePoint Import Migration API via the ShareGate migration tool. We have security concerns regarding the routing between SharePoint Online and the Azure Storage Account where the migration data lives. Does the API route traffic over the internet or does it route over the MS Backbone. We want to understand exactly where the traffic is routing to alleviate security concerns.
