I had the same problem and found a workaround on reddit.
You can select all the pictures in your slideshow folder and right-click then "make as background"
It seems to work as before

Windows 11 background slideshow was working, but after moving the original folder to another location, I can no longer set the background slideshow. While in the personalize menu, when i select "slideshow", the folder selection menu will appear for a split second and then disappear and change the background option to solid color. I assume it's defaulting to an invalid location, detecting an error, and closing. Is there a way to reset the default location so I can get past this bug?

Go to a folder with some images in it, select multiple images (just has to be more than one), right-click on one of them and select "set as background". Those images will be set as your slideshow background, but more importantly, you'll now be able to go into your background settings and change it.

Stephen Archbold 0 Reputation points2025-02-22T04:58:37.9933333+00:00 yea, they broke the slideshow with an update, lie on their forums and say that wasn't what the update was for, then removed the ability to select slideshow. broke steam aspect ratio too. you can multiselect multiple photos, but they will be waaayyy zoomed in, and since they removed the slideshow option you can no longer select the ratio. at least they didn't break my sound drivers like last time.

2025-10-09T00:22:11.5166667+00:00 So, I still have the problem and nobody connected with Microsoft appears to have a solution. I can sometimes make the slideshow come back briefly by right clicking and clicking Next desktop background but that’s it.
