Cloud-Based Computer Solution for Personal Use

Dear Azureus support

I am a private individual looking for a cloud-based computer solution to fully transition from a physical computer to a cloud-based setup. My goal is to find an ecological, resource-scalable, and cost-effective solution in the long run, meaning that the system’s performance (e.g., processing power, memory, and storage) can be adjusted as needed—whether for work, occasional gaming, or adopting new software or games.

I would like a virtual PC that is easy to use and accessible from any device via the internet. Additionally, I need the ability to back up the virtual PC to a physical hard drive at home, requiring some form of data transfer connection between my physical and virtual machines.

In the future, I also plan to purchase VR headsets, so it is essential that the virtual PC supports VR devices and other external peripherals (such as controllers, headphones, and additional monitors) seamlessly.

I see that you offer many different options, but they seem quite complex. Could you let me know if you provide a cost-effective solution that meets these criteria?

If you want flexibility and scalability with the option to customize your virtual machine for gaming and VR, Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is the best choice. It provides the most control over performance and is highly scalable. For a simpler, more managed experience, Windows 365 Cloud PC may be easier to set up and use, though it may have limitations with VR.

I know this is 6 months old but the problem with both M365 and the Azure Virtual Desktop is that they are only available for business/enterprise. I'd be interested in the service for the individual. I see no way to sign up for either offering unless I'm big enough to afford a full scale cloud infrastructure deployment.

I'm an individual. I believe all you need to do is create a business account to get a free trial of Windows 365.

I did not like the cloud PC that comes with the free trial. It's too slow for me.

I've tried all three plans below, but the only one worth keeping is the Premium plan; but even the cloud PC that comes with that plan seems slower than my local PC.

One thing for sure is that you can download and upload files to and from the Internet and your OneDrive cloud super fast with any of the cloud PCs. This certainly makes Files On-Demand a more useful option and may help eliminate problems with locally available files, which may be outdated.

You don't need a business, just create an onmicrosoft account. You can get a one-month free trial of Windows 365 Business:

Windows 365 Cloud PC seems only for business users. I could not get going without associating an ‘organization’ to my account. Very disappointing.

Microsoft built Windows 365 to fit into the corporate ecosystem:

Licensing is tied to Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise plans

It requires an Entra ID (Azure AD) tenant — which only organizations get by default

Even “Windows 365 Business” is not for private individuals, despite the name.

AVD (Azure Virtual Desktop) is a more flexible and personal-friendly alternative to Windows 365 Cloud PC.

In fact, AVD is a much better fit for individuals who want:

Full control over specs (RAM, CPU, storage)

The ability to install whatever they want (apps, games, dev tools)

A Windows 11 experience in the cloud — accessible from any device.
