Azure Account Issue: Unable to Delete Payment Method After Tenant Deletion; Cost Management Access Error**

Problem Summary: I used my personal credit card to create an Azure free account. However, I have not used any services at all, not even those covered by the free credits — essentially, the account has remained inactive. Later, I wanted to remove the credit card information and possibly delete the account. While exploring settings, I deleted the tenant associated with the Azure account, and since then, things have become unusual.

Current Issues:

In the Cost Management section, I see the following message:

"Cost Management requires access to a supported billing account or subscription. Please select a supported scope or create a new subscription to use Cost Management."

In the Payment Methods section, the option to edit or delete the credit card is grayed out — I’m unsure whether the card has been successfully removed or not.

As a last resort, I considered deleting my Microsoft account entirely, but I'm worried this won’t fully remove the Azure account due to possible garbage collection or orphaned resource issues.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Reviewed billing and payment settings multiple times.
  • Attempted to contact support through the Azure portal but faced limitations create support request seems not usable without the tenant and that no direct email contact to customer helper team.

Questions:

  • How can I confirm whether my credit card has been fully removed?
  • Why is the Payment Method section grayed out?
  • If I delete my Microsoft account, will it fully clean up all Azure-related data and subscriptions?
  • Is there a way to reset the Azure account state after tenant deletion?

    Hi LKM,

To ensure your personal credit card and associated information have been properly removed, especially after deleting the Azure tenant, let's address your concerns step by step:

Confirming Credit Card Removal: Since you deleted the tenant associated with your Azure account, the payment method may not be accessible through the Azure portal anymore. Without a tenant, you can’t access the billing portal to verify. However, if the tenant and subscriptions were fully deleted, the payment method is automatically detached after 90 days.

Grayed Out Payment Method Section: The Payment Method section being grayed out could be due to the deletion of the tenant, which may have removed your access to manage payment methods. Without an active billing account or subscription, you may not be able to edit or delete the credit card.

Deleting Microsoft Account: Deleting your Microsoft account will not necessarily guarantee the complete removal of all Azure-related data and subscriptions. While it may stop billing and disable services, there could still be residual data or orphaned resources.

Resetting Azure Account State: After tenant deletion, there is no straightforward method to reset the Azure account state. You may need to create a new subscription to regain access to the Cost Management features.
