Windows Sandbox hangs at splash screen

When I start Windows Sandbox it hangs at the splash screen.

  • There is around 12% CPU usage from cmproxyd.exe
  • Every minute the following error event 7011 is logged in the Windows System event log: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CmService service.
  • Waiting doesn't help (30 minutes now, and counting...)

Anybody knows how to fix this, or how to troubleshoot Windows Sandbox to see what's going on?

Details:

  • Windows 10 20H2 (Enterprise).
  • Windows Sandbox did work previously on the same computer, with Windows 10 1909. It didn't work with 2004 either.
  • Removing and re-enabling the Windows Sandbox features doesn't help.
  • Running as Administrator or not makes no difference,
  • List item
  • Hyper-V VMs works fine on the same computer.
  • McAfee Endpoint Security 10.7.0 with the Nov 2020 update. This is under enterprise control so I can't disable it or make changes, but it kind of is my main suspect...

Thanks!

After the other replies to my Q, I continued the path of blaming McAfee :). So I got help from the antivirus-admin of my organization, and was able to solve the issue:

First we tried disabling McAfee Endpoint Security, but it made no difference, so then we completely uninstalled it. And then Sandbox worked fine again.

But also: after re-installing McAfee Endpoint Security again, Windows Sandbox STILL worked.

So my best guess is that something wasn't quite right with McAfee which got fixed after the uninstall and reinstallation.

Really hard to debug this when you are unable to temporarily get rid of one of the most hated antivirus solution in the whole universe :) cant you uninstall it when you are a local admin?

In my experience whenever there was a Windows version upgrade, some application broke because of AV (Trend micro in my case)

    Hi,
what's your system version and OS build?
Type "winver" in Search Bar to check.
Have you tried to update to latest Win10 20H2 to check? Also I consider it is necessary to do a clean boot and temporarily disable the security software to check.
Hope this helps and please help to accept as Answer if the response is useful.
    Best Regards,
    Carl
