Unable to Change Nameservers for Azure App Service Domain (erzambayu.com)

A custom domain (erzambayu.com) was purchased via Azure App Service Domain, and the owner is trying to change the domain’s nameservers to Cloudflare:

  • aiden.ns.cloudflare.com
  • bella.ns.cloudflare.com

However, modification of NS records is not allowed for domains purchased via App Service Domain. When attempting to modify the NS record from the Azure DNS Zone, the following error occurs:

> "Failed to save record set '@'. The provided nameservers in a record set of type 'NS' with name '@' cannot be modified or removed."

Access as Owner has been verified in Access Control (IAM), and modifications have been attempted both via Azure DNS and the App Service Domain blade, but no options are available.

It appears the domain is managed through GoDaddy in the background, but there is no registrar access nor the ability to update NS manually.

What is needed:

  • A method to unlock or update the nameservers from Azure.
  • Access to the actual registrar panel for domain management.
  • Assistance from Microsoft Support to update the NS on behalf (previously requested but redirected to Q&A).

Reason for urgency:

To avoid further charges from Azure DNS Zone as credits are expiring, complete migration of DNS management to Cloudflare is needed, but the registrar-level lock is preventing this.

Any help or escalation path would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Erzam Bayu L
You're encountering a limitation with domains purchased through Azure App Service Domains. These domains are managed by GoDaddy as a sub-registrar, and as a result, Azure does not currently provide full registrar-level controls such as the ability to modify nameserver (NS) records directly.

By default, Azure App Service Domains lock NS records to Azure DNS.

While it's true that you can create zones and records, changing NS records at the registrar level is not possible from within Azure.

The error that you are seeing (“The provided nameservers in a record set of type 'NS' with name '@' cannot be modified or removed.”) validates this restriction. Therefore, you will have to transfer you domain out of Azure in order to change NS servers.

    Hi Erzam,

Since you are within 5 days of when you purchased your domain, you may cancel it and receive a refund:

App Service Domain - Cancel the purchase

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/manage-custom-dns-buy-domain#cancel-the-purchase

I don't know how long after you cancel before the name will be available to be registered at another domain registrar. Once the name is available you can go ahead and purchase through Cloudflare.

Another option is to transfer your domain away from Azure/GoDaddy, however, you will need to wait 60 days before this is allowed. If you prefer this option I can give you specific instructions for generating the auth code needed for destination registrar.

    Thanks.
