Surface - which one and what are it's specs

The Microsoft help for surface requires a product identifier and references the bottom of the Surface as indicating "Surface RT" "Surface Pro" etc. None of the options are just "Surface" which is what the one we've recently acquired (company one) says. There's no place on the MS Surface support website to just put in a serial number without designated the product. Why can't MS do what Dell does and just allow a serial number entry and pull up all the pertinents associated with product (specs, warranty, updates etc)?

Anyway - I just need to figure out what model surface this is and determine it's specs. It's running like **** and I need to research some reviews on it. Thanks in advance!

BTW - even posting here requires identifying the specific product within the Surface lineup. It would nice if MS help actual represented the product (i.e. knowing there's Surfaces out there with just "Surface" by the serial number).

    Hi KA_30,

Thank you for posting to the Surface Community.  I understand that you are having difficulties visually identifying your Surface model from the back of the device.  I realize that it can be a frustrating experience navigating the Support pages without knowing the exact Surface model.

I'm happy to assist you in resolving this issue.  Here are the steps to visually identify the Surface model you have and their respective technical specifications:

The Surface RT (1^st^ gen) family share a single position kickstand with the Microsoft logo inscribed.  They are available in a black finish only.  To determine if the device is a Surface RT or Surface RT Pro, check the back of the kickstand:

    • Surface RT devices contain the text Windows RT below the Windows logo
    • Surface RT Pro devices contain the text Windows 8 Pro below the Windows logo

The Surface 2 family share a dual position kickstand with the text Surface inscribed.  The Surface 2 comes in either a black or silver finish and the Surface Pro 2 is available in silver only. To determine if the device is a Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2, check the back of the kickstand:

    • Surface 2 devices contain the text Windows RT below the Windows logo
    • Surface Pro 2 devices contain the text Windows 8 Pro below the Windows logo

The Surface Pro 3 has a multi position kickstand with the text Surface inscribed.  It is available in silver only.  The back of the kickstand contains the text Windows 8 Pro below the Windows logo.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you require further assistance with identifying and navigating the Surface Support pages for your device.

    Thanks,

    WalterW288

This needs to be updated for the Surface 4 and Pro 4 (or whatever).

Why did Microsoft screw this up so badly?! This is ridiculous.

I have two Surface tablets. According to the box the second one came in it is a Surface Pro 3. The kickstand IS multi-position and has "Surface" on the outside and "Microsoft Corporation Model: 1631" (along with a bunch of other gibberish and logos) on the back of the STAND.

Under the stand on the body of the tablet is the Windows Logo (monochrome) next to "Microsoft". No trace of Windows 8 Pro. However the box says Windows 10 Pro all over it.

I don't have the packaging for the first one but it LOOKS identical

So - is it really a Surface Pro 3 with Windows 10 Pro or what?!

I haven't a clue about the first one except it too is running Win10Pro.
