I've replaced my desktop workstation with a PRO by using a HP Port Replicator (3005pr USB 3.0 Port Replicator (H1L08UT) plugged into the USB3 port. It uses a chip designed/made by DisplayLink (http://www.displaylink.com/). Attached to the replicator is a mouse, keyboard, 2-3 drives, LAN & a 24" monitor via the HDMI port. There is second DisplayLink video port and Audio/Out port. In total 6 USB ports (2 x USB3, 4 x USB2). The current driver is exceptionally stable...I do not have any issues what so ever. Performance is stellar. I even run a 3D CAD Sketchup Pro.
Does the Surface Pro satisfactorily support a USB Hub, and, can a Surface Pro effectively replace my work desktop?
I'm hoping to replace my work desktop with a Surface Pro. One of my concerns is accessing a powered R/W DVD/CD Combo drive, a printer, and an external 1 TB HD. I'll be accessing each of the above mentioned USB devices on an individual basis... never all, or a combination of, simultaneously. Also, has anyone successfully replaced their desktop with a fully loaded Surface Pro. I'm a Director of a Biomedical Engineering Department, and I would find it awesome to throw my Surface Pro "Desktop" in my bag at the end of the day and take it home with me, negating the need to VM into my current IBM PC, in order to access my MS Office Suite. I'm certainly not what I would characterize as a "Power User". So, am I a deranged lunatic in my thinking? Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated. Currently, I'm Pocket Clouding into my work PC via an iPad2, so you can image why I'm hoping the Surface Pro could possibly be the answer to my dilemma. Thanks, Kerry

2013-09-28T10:47:34+00:00 Hey Kerry - I'm using an Anker® USB 3.0 7-Port Hub from Amazon, about $35, with great success. Plugged in are: DasKeyboard, Logitech Performance Mouse, WD Passport 2TB drive, Samsung 512 SSD, DAC for sound, and Blu-ray drive. So, when the Surface returns to my desk, I just plug in the 27" Samsung 2560 x 1440 monitor (mini-Displayport to Displayport cable) , the single USB cable, the power cord and I have an unbelievable system. Can't tell I'm hooked up to a 2 lb. tablet unless I look over in disbelief.

2013-09-29T22:55:39+00:00 richiejeep, Hey, Thanks for taking the time to supply this information, especially the lead on the Anker USB Hub. With your positive comments, along with Hal's, no doubt the SPRO can step up and be a reliable desktop. I'll be passing this info along to my guys, and our IT comrades-in-arms, too. I think your last sentence is so poignant, and definitely says it all! I'm excited with the possibilities of being able to work my guys while they're lounging around @ home : > ) Just joking... maybe... well, maybe not.
Thanks again, Kerry

2013-09-28T02:27:28+00:00 Hal, Thanks a bunch! One exciting aspect of your comment is that I needn't purchase the MS SPRO video dongle... considering the HP PORT REPLICATOR has Video Out capability via the HDMI port. I'll price out the HP Port Replicator ASAP. And if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to include you in my ongoing "experience" loop. It was very kind of you to respond so quickly. BTW, the included Pic's of your PRO on the "Battlefield" were much appreciated. SUPER KUDO's to you from my staff and I for taking the time to visually enhance your comments. You are the Man! Thanks again, Kerry
